S Donte Whitner (Official Thread)

I agree completely. But I think him coming back for another year would benefit everyone. Because as fans, we would obviously love to see him come back and lead the Buckeye defense next year, and as him as a player and person, playing another year of college would help his draft stock and ultimately his career.

also, its highly likely that since he enrolled early, he would probably be able to graduate or get within a few classes of doing so.

This has probably already been mentioned but IIRC Doss was a projected 2nd or 3rd rounder after his JR year as well.

The parallels to the Doss and Whitner situations are striking.

doss was a two time all american after his junior season...

And he still went in the second round.

My point was that Doss slightly improved his draft status by staying an extra year not that Whitner had the better college career.

FWIW if I'm an NFL GM Whitner is the more complete player imo. His pass coverage skills are far superior to Doss and his tackeling/run support isn't a weakness its just not quite Doss level.

Always hurts to lose a player with experience. But good luck Donte and I think the Bucks will rebound nicely with the recruits we have been bringing in.

Remember when a LB'er went down in 2002 and we brought in a kid named "AJ Hawk" (who) - look how that situation turned out. Even after loosing a slew of defenders, we made it back to the Fiesta in 2003. Lets just hope we rebound the same way and that Donte goes in the top 2-3 rounds.

People are just disappointed because it's becoming quite obvious that it is a lose lose situation. Donte is not going to be a 1st day draft pick. There isn't even a guarentee he'll get drafted...sometimes that happens with safteies. He hasn't made a name for himself, and with another year of practice and college football, being a leader on the defense, it is almost certain that he would. If he is really that desperate for 5th round draft pick money, then that's fine, but it doesn't make much sense to me. Why not invest in yourself for another year, and then likely end up signing for a ton more money.
Also its a losing situation for the Buckeyes. They need him. He's A LOT better than where he would get drafted, and we know it. He'd be THE leader on our defense, and IMHO would have a great shot at being an AA.

That is what is disappointing. That his decision just doesn't make sense and doesn't seem to be good for either party.

This is a great post, and it sums up my thoughts on the topic.

quit whining you selfish bastages.

Donte feels he is ready for the next level. He's going. Wish him luck. He's given years of his life for the program, and he's done an admiral job.

All that's been said really amounts to: "It doesn't make sense, because I wanted him to come back".

Donte's got speed. Donte will get drafted. It's not like these pro teams don't see what we have seen. Just cheer the kid on jeez, some of you are making him out to be a traitor.

Good luck to Donte - I wish him the best. I don't think it is a bad decision - usually only 1-2 1st rd safeties each year, and the risk of injury or that his stock will not improve is definately there. I also think tOSU is in a much better position to "replace" Donte (not that he can be replaced) with guys who have seen the field.

Youboty, on the other hand, probably could have raised his stock immensly by coming back for another year. A shutdown corner who can tackle like Ashton does could have been a top 10-15 pick - huge $ there. I also think Ashton is a bigger loss for the team, as there is no one who has seen the field to replace him, and CB is a position that is exposed much more easily that safety IMO.

Even without my S & G googles on, I think Ashton would have been better served to return. Good luck to both in the League!!!
