S/C Coach Mickey Marotti (Official Thread)

Do the Bucks have the strongest, fittest team?

Seems like tackles get slipped through, guys get pushed around, and generally wear down. Two years in a row of 2nd half dominance - breaking down physically and mentally. Not to mention injuries.

I’m just “posting through it” now but I’m ready for scorched earth to feel alive again.

On the offensive side, I think Day wants a big pro style offensive line and it’s coming at the cost of mobility and conditioning.

On the defensive side, I think Day’s offense has been so staggeringly incompetent against Michigan that no conditioning in the world is going to prepare you to basically have to go full blast for an entire half because your offense can’t sustain anything.

We certainly don’t rotate as much on either side of the ball. I have to imagine this plays a role. Don’t know if it’s the right or wrong thing to do….

I think Mick has lost his fastball
I don't know. When the Buckeyes needed to play Tressell ball in the 3rd, they did so convincingly. I don't know why Day strayed from that after that one drive, but I think if he kept pounding the rock instead of going three and out with 2 pass attempts from McCord, the game would've ended different.

Maybe you could argue the defense didn't get enough stops. I thought they held ttun to FG's and did enough to give the offense a chance to win it on the final drive.

I didn't get the impression that the issue was physical conditioning this year, maybe it's mental more than anything.

They went away from it cause they got 1 yard. Then instead of calling the 2nd down run that annoys everyone they threw the ball it was incomplete and they were forced to throw it on 3rd and 9. This really isn't the point people think it is.

They didn't go away from the run. It just a 3 and out

A lot of 1st down run plays only get one yard or no gain.

What prevented him from calling another run call?

If it got stuffed again, it would've been 3rd and 8/9 and then he'd have to throw it from there. Same 3rd down scenario as an incomplete pass. Or maybe they would've only gotten 2-3 yards to make it a 3rd and 6/7 to throw for?

Regardless, the point I was making is that nothing really indicated that S&C was the deciding factor this year.

2021-22, it did seem like more of a factor. This year, it seemed like two well conditioned teams trading blows.

Turnovers was the real gamebreaker.

Cause that's how he called it? Not calling a run on one down is not going away from the run. It's just not. I'd argue most coaches would make that decision there. It didn't work but running 1 once instead of potentially twice is not going away from the run.

That's fine. It's a matter of semantics. It's also not really what I wanted to focus on with me bringing up the effectiveness of that drive in the 3rd where the Buckeyes just kept pounding the rock before that drive. It seemed to me there that they totally manhandled the wolverines and were capable of taking it to them in an old school, grown man football way. Which suggests that S & C isn't the main reason why the game was lost.

Oh I agree other then maybe on D this was not a toughness loss. And on D they had a lot of trick plays McCarthy making good and a few lucky plays. Plus as we saw in the snap counts they didn't fucking rotate. Which I'd argue made a much larger difference

There were a few moments where it can be argued that the defense wasn't tough enough. Maybe letting ttun get a TD after tying it at 17?

But they also held them to FG's a few times, which to me showed some toughness considering that they had their backs on the wall during those drives.
