  • On walk-on safety Brenten “Inky” Jones being Ohio State’s Burlsworth Trophy nominee this year: “Inky’s awesome. He just comes to work every day with a smile on his face, whatever we’re asking him to do, whether it’s on special teams, whether it’s on defense, whether it’s on scout team, he just comes to work. And I’ve seen him grow by leaps and bounds from when I got here last year to this year. So great young man, awesome family, and I’m just happy that he’s got that opportunity.” Eliano said he thinks Jones “can contribute in a major way” in the future.

He was nominated for an award and got in on special teams a bit last year. Made a few practice highlights and got a pick in the spring game.
The walkon, #32, is making plays :)

Bruce Feldman’s Freaks List: Ohio State Wide Receiver Jeremiah Smith, Walk-On Cornerback Brenten “Inky” Jones Ranked As Two of College Football’s Best Athletes

Ohio State has two of the freakiest athletes in college football.
Two Buckeyes made the top 30 of Bruce Feldman’s annual “Freaks” list for The Athletic, released Monday, which ranks the 101 most athletic players across college football.

The second Buckeye who made the list might also surprise you: Walk-on defensive back Brenten “Inky” Jones, who’s ranked 29th. Feldman wrote that Smith and former Ohio State linebacker Sonny Styles, who was ranked 10th on last year’s list, both stumped for Jones to be on the list – and his workout numbers this offseason backed that up. At 6-foot-2 and 216 pounds, Jones was clocked at 23.52 miles per hour with a 1.47-second 10-yard split this offseason, while he also broad jumped 11 feet, bench pressed 385 pounds and squatted 555.

While Jones has yet to see any defensive playing time in his Ohio State career, he’s played 150 snaps on special teams over the last three years and could be in line for a bigger role in that phase of the game as a fifth-year senior. He also ran with the second-team defense at cornerback in the first week of preseason camp, though he’s unlikely to be higher than fifth or sixth on the CB depth chart.

That's F'n sick. That kid has to have an expanded role just to see if any of that size, speed and strength translate to the field of play. I mean, he might get drafted based upon potential alone with those measurables.

And let's not forget, he passes the look test. He looks good getting off the bus. Father was probably a gym rat.

What Brenton Jones’ role looks like in 2026

Jones is not a player the Buckeyes are going to rely on to make a defensive impact on game day in 2026. Unless a lot of things go wrong in front of him on the depth chart, his snaps will come exclusively on special teams. Ohio State has plenty of talent at safety and across the secondary, with returners and newcomers competing for playing time ahead of him.

That said, it’s still a nice nod for Jones to earn recognition on Feldman’s list. Making the Freaks List as a walk-on is unique. The 2026 season is right around the corner, and the Buckeyes have as high of expectations as ever. Having walk-ons who show up on national athletic lists is just another reminder of the talent Ohio State has top to bottom heading into the 2026 season.

Just sayin': A tall CB with athleticism, strength, and speed. Recognized by a couple GREAT Ohio State players as a "freak". I have to really wonder what is holding him back......
