Anderson Out: OSU sophomore starting safety Anderson Russell was lost for the season in the first quarter of the Iowa game when he sustained a knee injury while covering a kickoff.

"From what I gather it's a season-ending injury, and that's a shame because he's a great kid and a great player and was really doing a fine job as a safety, but he'll be back," said OSU Head Coach Jim Tressel. "That's the great thing about today's world is those guys get some injuries and they get back, it just won't be this year, so someone is going to have to step up for us to keep moving on," said Tressel.

I remember reading discussion on this somewhere, but he's not qualified. After the 2nd game, you're borderline to getting a med red. He played 4 and a quarter of a fifth. On the bright side, Anderson will still have 3 more years in a scarlet and grey jersey after this season ends

Actually, it's after the third game, since participation in 20% of the season's games, rounded up, is the limit; as long as there's no participation after the midpoint of the season.

BMF

Anderson Russell is a BMF.

We were lucky to have no major injuries through four games. It was inevitable that someone was going to go down, I feel bad for AR, but like was mentioned he has three full years left and is going to be a hell of a player. JamO will fill in just fine.

I have question. Is he qualified for a medical redshirt? Seems to me if he is he should take it? He may not need the extra year but at least that would be an option for him.

As pointed out by BB73 above, he's past the normal restrictions for granting a medical redshirt for the season. However, that doesn't keep Ohio State from apllying for one anyway...IIRC, Hawaii got one for QB Timmy Chang some years back despite his playing more that the allowable limit of games in a season. However, since a MR would give him a sixth year (he sat out the 2005 season as a true frosh), it's very unlikely he'd get it.

Anderson's mother Karen, confirms the complete tear of the ACL, but also says there was no damage to the other ligaments.

Reading this article, it is easy to see why Anderson Russell is such a good kid...Mom says all of the right things.
free article... and you are correct...

technology is amazing... it wasn't too long ago that a torn ACL meant the end of a career, but now athletes typically make full recoveries, and in some cases are playing less than a year later. Ben Roethlisberger tore his ACL in January and was playing football in August... and think about Willis McGahee. not only did he blow out his ACL, he blew out his MCL and PCL as well, and he's playing some great ball for Buffalo...

all in all, it sucks right now for Anderson. however, judging what i know about him, he's going to rehab his knee like a mofo, and will come back next year stronger than ever...

aside: why doesn't everyone wear those knee braces that prevent it from going the wrong direction? do they really hinder mobility that much? all of the linemen wear them. it seems to me that you'd see other guys start wearing them as a preventative measure as well.

You mean Carson Palmer?

Yes. Even "soft" knee braces limit motion (and comfort) a significant amount.

I'd love to see a video of the injury. Considering it occurred on a touchback, I sort of wonder whether there was a cheap shot involved. Did someone go for a block below the waist?
On 1460 this afternoon JT said that Russell was untouched. He was running down the field on kick-off coverage, saw that it was a touchback, and began to turn towards the sideline while putting on the brakes. JT explained, "and then his brakes went out."

Just one of those freak things that happens. JT confirmed that surgery is scheduled for the 18th, and there is nothing regarding the injury to suggest anything other than a complete recovery.
