S Anderson Russell (official thread)

The following is a cut and paste from an article Grad posted in the Game 7 thread. The bit about the redshirt is very different than my understanding and, if accurate, would certainly open the door for Russell.

I do believe 'eligible' really means 'eligible to apply', so the 20% rule may still be the common standard. Or things may have changed.

Redshirting Ringer?
Sophomore running back Javon Ringer might not need surgery on the right knee he injured in the first half of the Illinois game, Smith said.
Ringer, who tore the same ACL in high school, will wait six to eight weeks to see how his knee feels and will then make a decision.
"If it's tight, no surgery," Smith said. "If it's not, we're no worse for wear. We've got to go back in and do (the surgery)."
Ringer will not play this season, whether he undergoes surgery or not.
Under NCAA rules, players who suffer season-ending injuries in the first half of a season are eligible for a medical redshirt. Ringer's injury occurred in the fifth game of the year, so he could be granted a redshirt and have three years of eligibility left. Smith said MSU will pursue that option.

I saw that quote, and knew it would bring questions about A-Russ. All I can say is that either John L. wasn't aware of all the rules (shocking!), is delusional (possible), or that he was aware of an exception to the "20% of the season (rounded up)" portion of it. I am not aware how they handle circumstances regarding exceptions. Hardship waivers are administered by the conferences, so it's up to the Big Ten, not the NCAA, to make the decisions.

Here's the relevant section from the current NCAA Division I bylaws (it indicates that (a), (b), and (c) must all be met):

ncaa.org/Division I manual

14.2.4 Hardship Waiver

A student-athlete may be granted an additional year of competition by the conference or the Academics/Eligibility/Compliance Cabinet for reasons of "hardship." Hardship is defined as an incapacity resulting from an injury or illness that has occurred under all of the following conditions: (Revised: 8/8/02)

(a) The incapacitating injury or illness occurs in one of the four seasons of intercollegiate competition at any two-year or four-year collegiate institution or occurs subsequent to the first day of classes in the student-athlete's senior year in high school; (Revised: 1/10/92 effective 8/1/92, 11/01/01, 8/8/02)

(b) The injury or illness occurs prior to the completion of the first half of the playing season that concludes with the NCAA championship in that sport (measured by the number of scheduled contests or dates of competition not exceeding the maximum limitations in each sport as set forth in Bylaw 17 as set prior to the first scheduled contest or date of competition of the designated official NCAA championship playing season in the applicable sport or the number of completed contests or dates of competition) and results in incapacity to compete for the remainder of that playing season; and (Revised: 1/14/97 effective 8/1/97, 4/26/01 effective 8/1/01, 4/3/02)

(c) The injury or illness occurs when the student-athlete has not participated in more than two contests or dates of competition (whichever is applicable to that sport) or 20 percent (whichever number is greater) of the institution's scheduled or completed contests or dates of competition in his or her sport. Only scheduled or completed competition (including exempted events but excluding scrimmages and exhibition contests identified as such in the legislation) against outside participants during the playing season that concludes with the NCAA championship, or, if so designated, during the official NCAA championship playing season in that sport (e.g., spring baseball, fall soccer), shall be countable under this limitation in calculating both the number of contests or dates of competition in which the student-athlete has participated and the number of scheduled or completed contests or dates of competition during that season in the sport. (Revised: 1/10/92, 1/14/97 effective 8/1/97, 4/26/01 effective 8/1/01, 3/10/04, 5/11/05, 8/4/05)

He had his surgery today and according to assistant coach Tim Beckman it went very well. He will not be back at all this season, even for the bowl game, but is expected to participate fully in spring ball.

You complete and utter bastard!
I was just going to post this!

Good news for next year, though. Hope he heals as fast as Worthington did.

Very good to hear. Speedy recovery, Anderson.

The team will likely have to 'lean' on the D next season and we will definitely benefit from having AR at full go.

aside: why doesn't everyone wear those knee braces that prevent it from going the wrong direction? do they really hinder mobility that much? all of the linemen wear them. it seems to me that you'd see other guys start wearing them as a preventative measure as well.

I am in my 50s, so its a different dynamic, but I am still in recovery from a bad MCL tear six months ago. My personal experience, as a runner, is that wearing a soft knee brace actually hampered my recovery twice and lead to complications as I started training again. I think it might be because it focused pressure on a narrower range of muscles in the capsule. I am back in gym again and have been pain free outside exercise only for about four weeks now. I am hoping to be running again in December.

So, possibly, there really is no substitute to building surrounding muscles and then beginning to exercise the injured area beginning with very light work?

Safety ready to return
Sophomore safety Anderson Russell said he is fully recovered from a torn knee ligament suffered Sept. 30 at Iowa. He's being held out of contact drills just to be safe.

"I'm 100 percent, they're just keeping me out," he said. "I'll be ready in the fall."

That's good news for OSU. Russell was just beginning to emerge last season when he got hurt. He had started four games and had 16 tackles and an interception.

"That was the hardest part, because everything was starting to come together for me," Russell said. "I'm going to have to start over, but I'll be able to do it again."

Although Jamario O'Neal and Nick Patterson were listed as starters at safety on the spring depth chart, Russell said Aaron Gant and Kurt Coleman had been the starters until Gant suffered a concussion in an April 6 scrimmage.
