Redshirting Ringer?
Sophomore running back Javon Ringer might not need surgery on the right knee he injured in the first half of the Illinois game, Smith said.
Ringer, who tore the same ACL in high school, will wait six to eight weeks to see how his knee feels and will then make a decision.
"If it's tight, no surgery," Smith said. "If it's not, we're no worse for wear. We've got to go back in and do (the surgery)."
Ringer will not play this season, whether he undergoes surgery or not.
Under NCAA rules, players who suffer season-ending injuries in the first half of a season are eligible for a medical redshirt. Ringer's injury occurred in the fifth game of the year, so he could be granted a redshirt and have three years of eligibility left. Smith said MSU will pursue that option.

I do believe 'eligible' really means 'eligible to apply', so the 20% rule may still be the common standard. Or things may have changed.

He had his surgery today and according to assistant coach Tim Beckman it went very well. He will not be back at all this season, even for the bowl game, but is expected to participate fully in spring ball.

Safety Anderson Russell, who was injured in the Texas game last season, is ahead of schedule in his rehab. Russell will not take part in contact drills this spring, but will do non-contact activity.

Safety ready to return
Sophomore safety Anderson Russell said he is fully recovered from a torn knee ligament suffered Sept. 30 at Iowa. He's being held out of contact drills just to be safe.
"I'm 100 percent, they're just keeping me out," he said. "I'll be ready in the fall."
That's good news for OSU. Russell was just beginning to emerge last season when he got hurt. He had started four games and had 16 tackles and an interception.
"That was the hardest part, because everything was starting to come together for me," Russell said. "I'm going to have to start over, but I'll be able to do it again."
Although Jamario O'Neal and Nick Patterson were listed as starters at safety on the spring depth chart, Russell said Aaron Gant and Kurt Coleman had been the starters until Gant suffered a concussion in an April 6 scrimmage.
