JamO can't cover or tackle, so we're going to play somebody who normally wouldn't even dress for the game, and that's your solution?

Sounds to me like you have unreal expectations of more than just JamO

Our freshmen safeties have only learned one postion each. AG has worked @ FS only. GS @ SS only. Aaron then is the FS option without moving a corner to safety. Which really isn't an option.:wink2: We really had hoped to RS both frosh safeties. Now it's possible that we'll have to burn at least one of 'em.

he first thing that's probably going to occur is Aaron Gant who's been working at the fifth safety and we've kept him off spot duty, maybe think we could red shirt him, I think that thinking is over. So you're going to have to move Aaron Gant into that fourth spot which will mean he'll get a lot more reps, he got some in the past weeks, he'll get tons beginning today. I think you have a couple other emergency things that you could do. Antonio Smith could always go back into safety. We'd prefer he not, though, because he plays nickel and corner. One thing that is being added into the two-deep or two and a half deep this week is Brandon Underwood, now is back into the mix and he'll have a chance to help maybe on some special teams and from a depth standpoint at that corner position, but right now, if we had a game this moment, our two-deep would include Nick and Aaron Gant as the back-up safeties with Jamario and Brandon as starters.

If he's put in the two deep, he will see PT on defense and not just ST...how many two-deep on defense hadn't seen the field this season?

O'Neal made improvement just within the Iowa game. He will be a good one with more experience.

I think getting to put Gant in against a weak foe like BGSU is the best way this could've played out. It's early enough in the season for Gant to develop by The Game, and being in against BGSU will allow him to get away with a lot more and bigger mistakes than against other teams....a perfect "break-in" game.

COLUMBUS - The season-ending injury to Ohio State safety Anderson Russell has cost freshman safety Aaron Gant a redshirt season.

With Jamario O?Neal moving into the starting lineup, Ohio State coach Jim Tressel said today that sophomore Nick Patterson and Gant, a freshman from St. Mary?s High in Orchard Lake, Mich., would be the two backups at safety for Saturday?s game with Bowling Green.

?He?ll get a lot more reps, beginning today,? Tressel said of Gant.

Also, sophomore Brandon Underwood, who wasn?t with the team during the preseason because of academic issues, has worked his way back onto the depth chart at safety and will likely see more work on special teams, where Russell was a standout.

Tressel said there was probably some dropoff from Russell to O?Neal, but he thought O?Neal was fine after replacing Russell in the first quarter of Ohio State?s 38-17 win over Iowa on Saturday.

?He didn?t grade out as a winning performance against Iowa, but he didn?t grade out poorly at all,? Tressel said. ?He?ll keep getting better.?

Given that we are redshirting three incoming LBs because there is no available PT and playing two true Frosh DBs because of need let's put him on a strict diet to avoid that potential.

Gant will get a serious look for more playing time because he is a big hitter and the coaches love that. With the injury to Russell, it would be great if he can step up and provide depth and possibly push O'Neil. Competition makes everyone better. Regarding his frame, he is listed at 6 feet and even if he adds 5 to 10 pounds I'm sure the coaches wouldn't mind too much as long as he pounds people over the middle.
