Ryan Leaf (Not Incarcerated)

I'm going to take a wild guess and say that there must be some underlying issues beyond Leaf "asking a player for a pill" for this to be a huge deal. Asking a guy for a prescription strength Ibuprofen in the locker room is no big deal. Show up at a guy's door at 3 AM twitching and offering sexual favors for a few Vicodin pills and there's a problem.

I have no idea what lead to this suspension but like I said, it sounds like Leaf might be battling addiction. Hopefully he isn't in full on Limbaugh mode and can recover quickly, the dude has been through the media wringer enough already without becoming a Strawberry type story.

If hes askin a player, its prolly stronger than vicodan. is probably oxycontin or morphine.

Not that the ESPN comments are the best place to find the cream of the crop of intelligent conversationalists (I hear it's a really well organized board though) but it's still kinda sad to read them. The two main differences between Brett Favre and Ryan Leaf are quality of play and attitude with the media, but I'll bet most of the numbnuts bashing Leaf for this would hold Favre up as a shining example of courage in the face of adversity for overcoming his painkiller addiction. I've always kinda rooted for Leaf and I think he got a bum rap - no other draft bust got heat like he did. Hope he straightens things out.

Ryan Leaf gets 10 years' probation | ProFootballTalk.com

Former NFL quarterback Ryan Leaf was expected to avoid prison time as part of a deal in which he pleaded guilty to eight felony drug charges in Texas, and today that became official, as Leaf was sentenced to 10 years of probation.

Leaf, who was joined in court by his mother, read a statement in which he acknowledged he had a drug problem.

"I convinced myself it wasn't a big deal because these weren't illegal drugs," Leaf said, referring to the pain pills he pleaded guilty to illegally obtaining. "But I did have a problem. It finally hit me square in the face in West Texas; I finally had to look squarely in the mirror."

Leaf resigned as quarterbacks coach at West Texas A&M in 2008 and later spent 42 days in rehab. He says he's been clean for 17 months.

Leaf, who is often described as the biggest bust in draft history, spoke today about how difficult that has been for him.

"I didn't walk away from it lightly and I think people have the wrong impression of that. It hurt me to the core that I wasn't successful at that time," he said. "I don't think people understand how much it hurt for me to walk away from it."

At least his protoge Jason Gesser (The Wazzu QB OSU faced back in the 2002 title year) has fared better...he is the QB coach at Idaho now...in reality, my buddy apparently got in a fist-fight with Leaf recently...not unusual. Even Akilli Smith did better, he is the starter for Team Jesus flag-football at QB according to the all-reliable Wikpedia.
