Ryan Day Radio Show: Ryan Day Says the Buckeyes “Want Perfection” On Offense, Praises Julian Sayin, Lincoln Kienholz and Tavien St. Clair for Their Continual Growth This Season

On Ohio State’s final home game, the team’s seniors
  • Day said the season “goes so fast.”
  • “Great Senior Day here for everyone to recognize all the hard work that our seniors have put into the program.”
  • “Great young men that are well-accomplished.”
  • Day said Saturday “will be a great opportunity to celebrate” the seniors.

On the Styles brothers participating in Senior Day

  • On Lorenzo: “It was great to see Lorenzo take that one back last week. The stadium was on fire when we returned that back. Very well-executed, but Lorenzo was the one that brought the house down for that. That was great.”
  • On Lorenzo: “He’s become a huge contributor to our team. He’s got a lot of versatility in what he does.”
  • Day said “we all know” what Sonny has meant to the program. “Just a great player.”

On Styles’ kickoff return touchdown

  • Day praised Nate Ebner for his role in Ohio State’s kickoff return touchdown.
  • Day said the Buckeyes have been hammering away at special teams the past couple of weeks, so it was good to see that hard work rewarded.
  • Day said Miles Lockhart, Jelani Thurman, David Adolph, Ryan Rudzinski, Joey Velazquez, Leroy Rocker and Brandon Inniss also played a pivotal role on the return.
  • “It’s great for special teams and the morale.”

On Rutgers’ special teams

  • Day said Ohio State must be prepared for Rutgers to do anything on special teams this week.
  • Day said Rutgers has always had a good special teams unit under Greg Schiano.
  • “They’re well-coached. They play hard on special teams.”

On Jayden Fielding

  • Day said Fielding has to do his job, just like the rest of the Buckeyes.
  • “That’s the message to everybody in the building: We have to be at our best.”
  • “We have to make sure we’re focusing on a daily basis on doing our job.”
  • “That’s gotta be it right now.”

On Ohio State’s depth against Rutgers

  • “Depth is gonna get challenged, as we know.”
  • “We need everyone to be at their best.”
  • “That’s why we try to play as much depth as we can. That’s why we practice so hard and prepare.”

On Ohio State’s wide receiver depth

  • “Once you start doing it a game, you build confidence in yourself.”
  • “When you come to Ohio State, you come to play football.”
  • “You came here for a reason. Here we go. Now is a great opportunity and you got to go show it.”

On Julian Sayin

  • “Had a good week of work.”
  • “Really good mindset.”
  • Day said Sayin is maturing every week in his preparation and practice.

On Lincoln Kienholz

  • Day called Kienholz’s performance against UCLA “good.”
  • “Had a good week of practice this week, too.”
  • “Played well. Threw a couple of really nice balls. … Was very physical on the sideline. I told him let’s not ever do that again unless it’s fourth down, but he’s a competitive guy, you can see it. Good to see him get on the field, get some run.”

On Tavien St. Clair

  • “I think he’s had his best week of practice the last week. Had a good day (on Tuesday). Making some good throws.”
  • “He’s learning the speed of the game and how fast it’s going, but he’s got the right approach, right mindset.”
  • Day said St. Clair has built rapport and trust with the freshmen pass catchers he came to Ohio State.
  • “He has the potential, and he’s gaining on it every day.”
  • Day compared St. Clair to Arvell Reese because of how Reese bought into his development as a freshman. “(Reese) used that as an opportunity to grow and for his development, and now look how much it’s paid off. It’s the same thing here with Tavien. I think it is paying off, and his attitude has been excellent the past week.”

On Ohio State’s freshmen progressing

  • Day said Ohio State takes “very seriously” that recruits must want to be a Buckeye.
  • “Someday you’re gonna wake up and drive over the Woody and ask, ‘Why did I come to Ohio State again? Is it really worth all this work?’ Your darn right it is, when you pick it.”
  • “I think for these freshmen, all that being said, they’re gonna go through phases where they kind of plateau, they kind of hit that rut. That’s why you invest in your faith, family and friends, so that they can pull you out of that.

On Ohio State’s players wanting to improve

  • Day said Ohio State’s players want to be around the Woody as much as possible.
  • Day said the Buckeyes are never in a hurry to leave the facility after practice. He joked that nobody leaves tire marks in the parking lot.
  • Day said he’ll often find his players on the field, in the locker room or in the film room well after practice has ended.

On Ohio State’s offense scoring touchdowns

  • “When you keep getting at-bats, you want to get there.”
  • “We want perfection.”
  • “We want to score every time we touch the ball.”

On going for it vs. kicking a FG in the red zone

  • “There’s give and take.”
  • “When you score seven points, that’s a big deal when your defense is playing well, so we want to be aggressive and scoring touchdowns. That’s worth a lot more than three points.”
  • “The other way to look at it is you come off the field and you got points and you keep that momentum going, you keep the pressure on the other team. How well your defense is holding up is important in making those decisions.”

On Ohio State’s stadium atmosphere for home games

  • “I think the stadium has been excellent this year.”
  • “I think the atmosphere has been excellent.”
  • “You can feel that when you’re out there. I think the players feel it.”
  • “This year, the crowd is really feeding off the players and the players are really feeding off the crowd.”
