Which brings us to the Nazi-Soviet UFO. Citing interviews with a single unnamed former engineer from government contractor EG&G -- now part of URS Corp. (URS) -- Jacobsen purports to lift the veil on what really crashed near Roswell, New Mexico, in 1947 and what happened to the wreckage when it got to Nevada.

The craft, she writes, wasn't an alien spaceship, as many have since theorized, nor was it a weather balloon, as the U.S. military alleged in its clumsy cover story. It was, according to Jacobsen, a Nazi-inspired Soviet spy plane with Cyrillic letters embossed on the hull, crewed by malformed adolescents, two of whom survived the crash.

Stalin used captured Nazi aircraft designs to build the plane, according to Jacobsen. She says he had Mengele provide surgically altered 'grotesque child-sized aviators' who were supposed to climb out of the aircraft and be mistaken for visitors from Mars -- to sow the kind of confusion in the U.S. created by Orson Welles's 1938 'War of the Worlds' radio broadcast.

The wreckage and the comatose survivors found their way to the Nevada test site, where Area 51 engineers may have experimented on them for decades, Jacobsen says.

Finally got around to reading the book...

It's actually not bad, it provides a pretty good timeline for the history of the area just north of the Nellis test range and even has a few details that were new to me.

Jacobsen does have a bad habit of presenting her supposition as fact, makes some glaring technical errors on subjects in which she is not overly knowledgeable & of course there is the "SOVIET UFOS CREWED BY MUTANTS!!" nonsense...luckily the last bit can be glossed over pretty easily.

One that is entirely accurate...and would land you in prison

I won't even touch on the claim that in the late 40's the soviets had radical (saucer shaped) high performance aircraft that were completely unmatched by anything the US had to offer decades later....yet there is absolutely no trace of the same capabilities to be found in soviet designs from that point forward.

It flew there...it was a super secret design (by the Horton brothers) pilfered from the Germans via the Soviet version of project paperclip.

But as I said before despite Jacobsen's questionable conclusions in a number of areas the background information alone makes the book worth picking up. Especially the first hand info from guys who worked at the facility in the very beginning when it was a bunch of hardback tents servicing the first U-2s.
