WE LOST TO USC 35-3

Don't know about you, but I'm convinced they're a pretty good team.

They're definitely good, but when did they beat us? The day Boeckman drove the final nail in his coffin, Pryor was still wet behind the ears and our best offensive weapon was in street clothes.

That said, they tend to show up for the Rose and have dominated the Big Ten in those games. PSU will have to play their best in this one, especially on defense.

I rarely say this but, roar Lions, roar. :psu2:

I'm sick of seeing the Big Ten get waxed in Pasadena, hearing about it ad nauseum on TV, and I'm sick of that smirk on Petey's face. Our conference's image will catch up to us sooner or later, if we - all of us - don't start playing better in big games.

Besides, PSU fans will be pains in the ass no matter the outcome, and we can take care of that next season.

If you didn't know the ages of these guys, who would you say is older? We give JoePa a lot of shit (and he puts a lot of shit in his pants), but the guy looks good for his age. Conversely, Petey looks like he's starting to show some serious wear and tear...

A Philly paper's not fond of the way Carroll talked about JoePa.

Carroll has odd way of praising Paterno

It's always dangerous to read intent into people's comments when you aren't actually there listening to them speak, so we'll cut Southern Cal coach Pete Carroll some slack.

But, talk about highlighting the negative. All Carroll did Friday at the first Rose Bowl news conference with Joe Paterno was harp on Joe's failures.

"He's persevered so much," Carroll said as if Paterno was not the winningest coach in Division I-A college history. "I've thought about it, and to me it's not all the games that he's won; it's how he's survived the pressure of all the big games that you lose over that many years."

Hello, Pete. It's only been 126 losses since 1966. That's an average of fewer than three losses per season. That doesn't seem so hard to take.

"The losses are so difficult and so challenging," Carroll continued. "It's amazing that he's been able to keep the right attitude and stay on top of the game for so long."

Yes, amazing. Job for life. Idolized by millions. Rich as Midas. Sounds tough to take.

"It's kind of an unnatural experience he's put together," Carroll said. "And he's still full of the devil."
Unnatural? What is Joe, an alien? The devil? Joe's more like Uncle Charlie than Satan. Get a clue, Pete.

Cont'd ...

Trojans may be short a few players for Rose Bowl.

Stanley Havili, who started 11 games at fullback, did not practice Saturday because he has not been cleared academically to participate in the New Year's Day game, Coach Pete Carroll said.

Havili's academic standing could change during the week, according to Carroll, but the third-year sophomore from Utah also is nursing a sore knee that prevented him from practicing before the Trojans broke for the holidays.

Carroll said Friday that Havili was not at practice because of travel issues.

Senior safety Kevin Ellison, who has not practiced because of knee soreness, said he probably would not play against Penn State.

"I don't think so," he said when asked if he would be ready by Thursday.

Ellison had knee surgery in November and missed four games. He played against UCLA on Dec. 6 but has not been able to practice since.

"I want to play, but if I can't go out there and move the way I want to and the way I need to so that I can help the team, I'll have to sit out," he said.

Tailback Stafon Johnson completed most of the practice but was held out of team scrimmage drills to protect the right kneecap he injured last week. "It's a little sore because the grass is a little mushy, but for the most part I felt good," he said. "I made the proper cuts when I was supposed to, so that's a good sign."
