Rivals' Top Ten Recruits from Ohio

Rivals came out with their ten most highly rated recruits from the State of Ohio. Only five Buckeyes made that list:

1. CB Ted Ginn, Jr. (#2 class of 2004) (Ohio State)
2. RB Beanie Wells (#3 class of 2006) (Ohio State)
3. OT Mike Adams (#3 class of 2008) (Ohio State)
4. OT Josh Myers (#3 class of 2017) (Ohio State verbal)
5. SAF Prescott Burgess (#6 class of 2003) (Michigan)
6. ATH Latwan Anderson (#15 class of 2010) (Notre Dame College)
7. OLB Jordan Hicks (#16 class of 2010) (Texas)
8. SDE Robert Rose (#17 class of 2006) (Ohio State)
9. WR Fred Davis (#19 class of 2004) (Southern Cal)
10. ATH Spencer Ware (#19 class of 2010) (LSU)

Ginn and Wells were all-time greats at Ohio State, and Adams was very good; Rose was a bust; expectations are off the charts for Myers, but he's still a junior in high school.

Burgess, Hicks, and Ware underperformed; Davis had a rocky start but finished strong; Anderson has yet to play a down of college football and is currently enrolled at Notre Dame College, a Division II school in South Euclid, Ohio.

But, Burgess gave me one of my favorite memories from The Game in 2005...

30% of the list lived up to the hype and all at OSU. The worst thing that came of that list was Robert Rose was a solid contributor, never a star.

All the busts busted elsewhere.

Fred Davis was no big loss given the offense at OSU in the years he would have played.

Tough crowd!
2nd team All-American as a senior, 2.5 year starter, came back from losing two consecutive years to injury.

Latwan would've got himself killed if he stayed at Miami.
From the Rivals article:
Hicks was a talented and big linebacker out of high school who was amazing coming off the edge as a pass rusher so I expected him to be a blitzing nightmare at Texas but that never happened. Injuries obviously hurt his career but he also didn't adapt as well to the speed of the college game as expected ... he's an example of a big-time Longhorns recruit who didn't pan out leading to the recent mediocrity of the program. Hicks did have a very good final season in Austin ... but based on his college career ... he wasn't a hit on the rankings scale.
I can't really disagree with any of that. Hicks certainly didn't play like a five-star, can't miss recruit. Maybe he will find more success at the NFL level.

Here's all the rest of the five stars from Ohio during the Rivals era:

LB Mike D'Andrea (#29 class of 2002) (Ohio State)
RB Maurice Clarett (#37 class of 2002) (Ohio State)
OT Alex Boone (#20 class of 2005) (Ohio State)
DE Ben Martin (#20 class of 2007) (Tennessee)
TE Kyle Rudolph (#20 class of 2008) (Notre Dame)
WR DeVier Posey (#21 class of 2008) (Ohio State)
OT Kyle Kalis (#22 class of 2012) (Michigan)
DE Adolphus Washington (#25 class of 2012) (Ohio State)

Interesting to note that from 2002 to 2008, Rivals rated at least one Ohioan as a five star every single cycle. There were none in 2009, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015 and, to date, 2016. Kraemer and Cooper seem like the best candidates in Ohio this year.

DE Mike Kudla (#49 class of 2002) (Ohio State)
LB Prescott Burgess (#11 class of 2003) (Michigan)
CB Donte Whitner (#19 class of 2003) (Ohio State)
CB Ted Ginn, Jr. (#4 class of 2004) (Ohio State)
WR Fred Davis (#11 class of 2004) (Southern Cal)
OL Alex Boone (#15 class of 2005) (Ohio State)

OT Andrew Norwell (#8 class of 2010) (Ohio State)
LB Jordan Hicks (#18 class of 2010) (Texas)
LB Trey DePriest (#6 class of 2011) (Alabama)
QB Braxton Miller (#36 class of 2011) (Ohio State)
DE Steve Miller (#42 class of 2011) (Ohio State)
DE Adolphus Washington (#10 class of 2012) (Ohio State)
RB Brionte Dunn (#32 class of 2012) (Ohio State)
OT Kyle Kalis (#35 class of 2012) (Michigan)
WR Jalin Marshall (#32 class of 2013) (Ohio State)
S Dymonte Thomas (#39 class of 2013) (Michigan)
LB Sam Hubbard (#29 class of 2014) (Ohio State)
OT Josh Myers (#15 class of 2017) (committed to Ohio State)

Scout also rated Ohio native Cornellius "Tank" Carradine (#2 JUCO class of 2011) (Florida State) as a five star prospect.

In all, Scout has ranked 32 Ohio preps and one JUCO as five star prospects, compared to just 18 at Rivals.

Avg. national rank for Ohio five stars over the course of 11 cycles at Rivals is 16.5
Avg. national rank for Ohio five stars over the course of 11 cycles at Scout is 22

It should be noted that up until 2013, players in Scout's top 50 received a five star grade.
