Buckeyes of note...
Beanie #20 RB- I guaren-damn-tee he finishes MUCH higher, lots of people overlooking him...

I'd put him in the top 10, probably, but I have trouble listing him too high, as he still hasn't started a game. But you're right that he will finish much higher.

He probably dropped a couple of spots after the BCS NC game. I would have put him #1 before that game.

Bollman #6 OC

I don't know about this one. If Tressel calls the offensive plays, what does an offensive coordinator do? Besides, until last year and Troy Smith, I was never really impressed with Ohio State's offensive playcalling on a consistent basis.

The most glaring ommission to me is Heacock left off the list of DC's. Sure we got lit up the last two games, but they still rank Ron English #5?????

Ron English took a defense that was supposed to be average and turned them into a defense that averaged only 30 rypg going into the Ohio State game. If there's a better defensive coordinator in the NCAA this year, I don't know who it is.

And Heacock took a team that was supposedly destroyed by graduation and the draft (9 of 11 starters were gone after 2005 season) and turned them into one of the best defenses in the country, as far as giving up points. I'd put him in the top 10. Probably even top 5.

That front 7 had 3 mid/high 2nd round draft picks on it. Hardly average talent wise.

As far as run yards per game, when teams can throw on you at will, they don't need to run much.

English did a good job last year...much better than the previous coach. But they got lit up every bit as much, if not more, than we did in the last two games. Plus they had experienced (if underachieving) talent returning on that defense. English should probably be in the top 10, but Heacock has to be a few spots above him.

Were those 3 mid/high 2nd-round draft picks thought to be drafted that high before last season? Or was their draft stock increased because of last season?

And I'd argue that teams quit trying to run on Michigan, because they knew it was a losing battle.

You guys are probably right - I'm not going to argue too much. In fact, I agree (now) that Heacock belongs ahead of English. But I still think that English did a very impressive job in his first season as DC in Michigan.

Interesting questions. Though I think they had the talent to be considered where they were drafted before last season, I doubt they would go there had their defense had another season of poor performances. I think the last point could be argued from either side rather successfully.

I concur.

And some guy named Branch. Was he a DT? I think he was thought to be a high draft pick. But I never even checked to see if he went into the draft, or where he got drafted.

Who was the third?

UM faced two good defenses and got torched. They handled Wisky & PSU, but both are fairly one-dimensional (PSU in the sense that Morelli is anything but consistent). MSU was already in disarray, especially up front, by the time UM played them.

One can argue that the db talent, especially at safety, was greatly lacking... but at some point English has to take the blame that's been put upon Hermann for years. He's their lead recruiter on D and DB coach until this upcoming year.

I understand the excitement from UM fans about English, but not nationally (yet). Excellent recruiter, dynamic attitude, inspires/connects with players (unlike hermann), etc. But he has a ways to go to show he's a very good DC, let alone a top-5 DC nationally.

He went to Arizona early in the second round. The third was probably Hall.

Did you mean to say offenses? Are you counting Ohio State and USC? How about Notre Dame? (Let's not start the argument here about whether Notre Dame was "good.") I agree about Wisconsin, Penn State, and Michigan State.

Maybe this is like that list of "Top Movie Comedies" of all time, where Napoleon Dynamite was in the top 10. The movie has its moments, but it's too new to be on any "all time" list. Let it live for 20 years and see if it's still funny. Maybe we should let Ron English stay DC for a few years and see if he deserves to be on that list.
