Ricky Williams (official thread)

jwinslow;838975; said:
And how exactly did he live up to his contract?

Yep, that's a gotcha... He chose to break his contract. Therefore the Dolphins don't owe him anything beyond what the law and the agreements signed to call for.

My first argument is that those of us of more modest talent, means and incomes often look at someone like Ricky Williams and take on that, "God gave you the talent, now you owe God and the rest of us all that you can do with that talent." My answer is that they do not. It may seem foolish, selfish or even wrong, but it's their choice.

My second argument is that the "we're a band of brothers" view of the current sports world is nonsense. It begins with the fact that players are drafted, often against their wishes and then bound to a team. If they were as tight and concerned about their team mates as many seem to think they are there would be very few free agents or expressions of the desire to be a free agent.

Even in free agency a player is limited to who will offer him a deal, he seldom has the opportunity, as Ken Griffey Jr. had, to cherry pick his deal.

And yet, what we see is that when given a choice to stick with your old team, and team mates, as virtually every free agent has, I don't see or hear of any of them saying things like, "Gosh, we've worked so hard to get where we are and I want to just hang here with the (insert francise) and my buddies." or "The fans here have really made me feel at home. I intend to take less money and stay right where I am cause I feel I owe them that." And when was the last time you saw a Super Bowl team... a team that won the Holy Grail of football... not have a free agent pack his bags and go elsewhere?

The NFL is selling fantasy... I like the fantasy, I want to believe they all love each other and would die for dear old Cincinnati (well, actually, I'd rather they wanted to die for Cleveland.) but I realize that it's fantasy.

Williams unlikely to return to Dolphins

STEVEN WINE

Associated Press

DAVIE, Fla. - If Ricky Williams makes a comeback, it most likely will be with a new team. Miami Dolphins coach Cam Cameron, speaking publicly about Williams' latest drug relapse for the first time, said nothing has changed regarding the suspended running back's status.
But several Dolphins said they're ready to play without Williams, and Cameron acknowledged it's difficult to salvage the careers of troubled players.
"The easiest predictor of future behavior is previous behavior," Cameron said Friday. "Could I have made that statement 15 years ago? Absolutely not. I was trying to save every guy in the game.
"Ultimately it comes down to the team. You want to be as fair as you can be, but no individual comes above the team."
When asked what his batting average is trying to "save" troubled players, Cameron said, "Very low."

MIAMI -- Suspended running back Ricky Williams applied for NFL reinstatement Monday, his agent said.
"Ricky is extremely excited about the prospect of playing in the NFL again and hopeful for a positive response," his agent Leigh Steinberg said.

I'll bet he gets a positive response on another drug test fairly soon. :tongue2:

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has decided to reinstate Miami Dolphins running back Ricky Williams after a suspension that lasted 18 months because of Williams' violation of the league's substance abuse policy, sources told ESPN.
The Dolphins have been notified of the commissioner's decision. It is unknown if the team will welcome him back but it is expected they will have a two-week roster exemption to make that decision.

Williams' status uncertain as he arrives at Dolphins complex

Associated Press

DAVIE, Fla. -- Ricky Williams arrived at the Miami Dolphins complex riding in a team van late Thursday morning, ready to resume his NFL career after a 1?-year suspension -- if the team wants him.
Williams' suspension ended Wednesday when he was reinstated by the NFL. The announcement came only hours after Dolphins coach Cam Cameron decided to give the quarterback job to rookie John Beck, who will make his NFL debut Sunday at Philadelphia.
The back-to-back developments might provide exactly the sort of shakeup a winless team needs. Cameron was mum regarding whether the winless Dolphins want Williams back, but linebacker Joey Porter said he would love to have the 2002 NFL rushing champion as a teammate "just because we're 0-9."
"I don't care who you got ... if you could run the ball like Ricky did," Porter said. "I mean, right now I'd do anything for a victory."

NFL notebook: Ricky Williams done for season
Chest injury curtails his comeback with Dolphins
Wednesday, November 28, 2007 3:03 AM

From wire reports

After nearly two years out of the NFL, it took running back Ricky Williams six carries and less than half a game to halt his comeback Monday night. A torn muscle in Williams' chest ended his season, his agent said.
Leigh Steinberg said a pectoral muscle came away from the bone, and Williams will need four to six weeks in a sling. After that, the rehabilitation will take approximately five months. Steinberg expects Williams to be ready for next season, the last year of his contract.
