Rick Pitino (HC St. John's)

Not that i disagree... but im still confused how UNC got away scott free with faking degrees for hundreds of 'student' athletes

What determines that a decade of faking classes is nothing, rape of minors is 2yrs, but sex is death penalty? Is Ken Starr running NCAA infractions?

Does Lousiville having to vacate the 2013 championship mean Pitino has to have his tottoo removed?

Rick Pitino says he's done coaching, wrote book for closure

Rick Pitino left no doubt on Wednesday, saying "I'm finished coaching" during an appearance on ESPN's "Get Up."

The former Louisville coach is making the rounds promoting his new book "Pitino: My Story." He had written in the book that his "coaching career is possibly finished."

It's been nearly a year since an FBI investigation into college basketball led to his termination at Louisville. He maintained Wednesday that he was unaware that Adidas allegedly paid $100,000 to the family of five-star prospect Brian Bowen to steer him to Louisville.

Pitino said he took a lie detector test and the results showed that "I passed, saying I knew nothing about any money given to anybody. I knew nothing about Adidas doing anything."

He said he was also unaware that former staffer Andre McGee was holding parties in a dormitory with strippers for players and recruits.

"Why would someone making a lot of money as a head coach allow those actions to happen?" Pitino said on "Get Up." "And ruin his program, and ruin his legacy? It lacks common sense for anybody to believe that."

Pitino was asked if he accepts that the buck stops with the coach when a program has problems.

"The fact that I'm not coaching, the love of my life outside of my family, the fact that I lost basketball -- eat, sleep, and drink from 5:30 in the morning until late at night, I eat, drink and sleep the game -- that's my penalty," Pitino said. "The buck did stop with me. I'm out of work."

Ex-Louisville coach Rick Pitino hoping to become NBA coaching candidate

After his firing following an FBI probe at Louisville, Rick Pitino is planning to use the season to immerse himself in the NBA game and hopes to become a candidate for head-coaching openings in the spring.

"I just want to be a part of an organization," Pitino told ESPN. "I want to develop young players. I want to be part of a team. I miss it terribly. I'm using this time to really study the NBA. If something opens up with a young basketball team, I'd have deep interest in it.

"I think the league is going to get younger and player development will become even more important to every organization. That's my forte. I believe I can help an organization find a pathway to success."

Pitino has hired Drew Rosenhaus, a high-profile NFL agent, to represent him. Rosenhaus' company does represent two NBA players: Portland's first-round pick Anfernee Simons and Clippers center Montrezl Harrell.

Pitino, 66, was fired at Louisville in the aftermath of the FBI probe into college basketball. Testimony and recordings of government-taped calls suggested that Pitino was unaware of the payments made to former Louisville recruit Brian Bowen's family.

The FBI probe was one of a series of scandals at Louisville under Pitino, including an NCAA investigation into strippers and prostitutes used in recruiting visits with players.

In all likelihood, Pitino has a bigger obstacle to returning to the NBA than NCAA failings: convincing league executives and owners that his ego would allow him to be a willing partner with a front office. Many GMs say that they'd be hesitant to hire Pitino based on the belief that he'd be difficult to coexist with, especially in the turbulence of a rebuild.

Nevertheless, few question his greatness as a coach, his ability to maximize the talent of young players and organize them into a competitive group on the floor. Among others, Pitino's task will be to convince decision-makers of his sincerity in scaling back his persona and reshaping himself as humbled, determined basketball coach.

Organizational structures have changed dramatically since Pitino served as president and coach of the Boston Celtics, and several GMs asked about Pitino believe that an owner would be more apt to take a chance on Pitino than a top basketball executive.

Pitino posted a 102-146 record with the Celtics before resigning early in his fourth season in 2000-01. Pitino was reported to have been overwhelmed with his dual roles under what had been pro sports' biggest coaching/executive deal to date: a 10-year, $70 million contract. He resigned with nearly $30 million left on the deal.

Rick Pitino's team captures Greek Cup title

Rick Pitino is a champion again.

The former Louisville coach led Panathinaikos to the Greek Cup Championship by beating PAOK in the final 79-73 on Sunday.

Hired in December by the Athens club, Pitino took over a team that featured several players with NBA or NCAA ties.

Florida Gators product and former Memphis Grizzlies point guard Nick Calathes was named the game's MVP after posting 19 points and nine assists.

Panathinaikos reached the final after their semifinal opponent, Olympiakos, forfeited the contest. The David Blatt-led team never came out for the second half in protest of the game's officiating.

Pitino's name keeps being brought up for potential college coaching jobs. The schools interested in him are brazenly saying they want cheaters so long as they win. Alabama unsurprisingly is one that has interest.

Pitino settles with Louisville, seeks 'new chapter'

Rick Pitino and Louisville have reached a settlement in lawsuits stemming from his departure from the school in October 2017, with Pitino receiving no money from the school, it was announced Wednesday.

"Pitino's personnel file shall reflect that his employment with ULAA ended as a result of a resignation," the settlement agreement stated.

Pitino sued the University of Louisville Athletic Association for breach of contract on Nov. 30, 2017, and was seeking more than $35 million. The ULAA filed counterclaims on Dec. 13, 2017, pursuing damages allegedly caused by the former basketball coach.

Both Pitino's lawsuit and the ULAA countersuit were mutually dismissed as a result of Wednesday's settlement.

In his individual statement, Pitino said he dropped the lawsuit against the advice of his lawyer and is looking forward to what's next in his career.

"Today, I move on to a new chapter in my life," Pitino said in a statement released by his lawyer. "... I am very proud of the many accomplishments my teams achieved at [UofL]. I'm so thankful and honored to coach such dedicated athletes. I'm also disappointed in how it ended. But as head coach I am held responsible for the actions of all team members."

Dude like that doesn't just walk away with nothing. They have something on him that hurts him as much as the school.

The joint statement gives him a pas on knowledge of the violations, i.e. "For 17 years, Coach Pitino ran a program that combined excellence on the court with a commitment to the program’s student-athletes, their academic achievement, and their futures in and out of basketball. Nevertheless, there were NCAA infractions during his term which led to serious consequences for the university. Although these infractions may not have occurred at Pitino’s direction or with his knowledge"

Here's one guy's speculation as to why he was willing to walk away with nothing:

"For Pitino, this appears to be about trying to get back into the college game for one last run as a head coach. It will be interesting to see how often his name comes up as jobs start to pop open next spring."
