Brutus1: "Unlike the Great One, he's spent most of his career playing a physical game."
The two big differences in stats between Lemieux and Gretzky are: a.) Lemieux (even in the early years) could never stay healthy. He'd always put up phenomenal numbers in abbreviated seasons. Had he been able to play 82 games each season, his numbers would've been as good (if not better) than Gretzky. And that's saying something.
b.) Gretzky played his prime on the best hockey team of all time: he had Messier, Kurri, Anderson, Coffey, Lowe, Fuhr, etc. Lemieux was on a terrible to average Penguins team for all those years, up until they won the Stanley Cup. Lemieux had no help whatsoever.
"He made alot of money for Kevin Stevens and Jaromir Jarg."
He didn't make Jagr. Jagr's declined lately because he got the big money and doesn't care anymore. But he's still a great talent. Now on the other hand, Kevin Stevens (as well as Tomas Sandstrom, Petr Nedved, Luc Robataille, etc.) were all made by Lemieux. He even bolstered Ron Francis' offensive numbers quite a bit in those days.
"There must be something in the water at the Garden that makes players average."
The Rangers are who they are. And that's the worst organization in hockey since 1940. As much as I love the team, they got lucky and tripped over a Stanley Cup in 1994. This team is no different than my beloved Ranger teams of the 80's, except that team hustled & cared. And always (at least) made the Playoffs.
