Rick Barnes Out At Texas

I actually like this hire for Tennessee. They can't afford sexy right now, IMO; they need stability. Hart can't gamble on an up-and-comer.

Tennessee hires Rick Barnes

Former Texas coach Rick Barnes has reached an agreement to become Tennessee's next men's basketball coach, a source told CBSSports.com on Tuesday morning.

A formal announcement is expected Tuesday afternoon.

CBSSports.com reported Monday that Barnes had been offered the job and would accept barring an unexpected late snag in negotiations, according to sources. That hypothetical snag never materialized, and Barnes and Tennessee finalized a deal early Tuesday.

Barnes will become Tennessee's third coach in three years.

He's replacing Donnie Tyndall.

Tyndall was fired because of NCAA violations he allegedly committed at Southern Miss.

VCU's Shaka Smart in discussions with Texas about coaching post

VCU's Shaka Smart is in discussions with Texas about its coaching vacancy, sources said Monday.

Texas parted ways with Rick Barnes over the weekend after 17 seasons.

Smart, who's been at VCU since 2009 and led the Rams to the 2011 Final Four, has had past opportunities to leave VCU and stayed. But this time, sources say the fit at Texas may be too good to pass up. He's turned down vacancies at Maryland, NC State, Marquette, Illinois, and Wake Forest over the past five years.

If Smart turns down Texas, the Longhorns likely will turn their attention to Utah's Larry Krystkowiak and Xavier's Chris Mack.

I'm kind of surprised Gregg Marshall isn't on Texas's short list, but maybe they don't want to get into a bidding war with Alabama, who is rumored to be throwing out numbers like $5 million a year to get him.

They dont... see my Gordon Gecko post. Plus they need a charmer, Marshall is more of a blunt guy, like their AD and if you're trying to raise metricshittons of money it doesn't bode well. They are having to build a new arena in the next 5 years ....

Agreed, Marshall might not be the ideal fit there. He's one of my favorite coaches, but he strikes me as a guy who wants to be the top dog at his school. He won't be that at Texas or Alabama. Some media in the Midwest also think he's a bit weird personality wise, but I don't understand that. Coaches naturally are wired differently.

A knowledgeable source informs me that as of this morning there have been no direct talks b/t Texas and Shaka Smart. Not sensing momentum.

It is still a great job and Smart would be tempted to take it, but the longer it drags, the less likely it appears.

If you want a sleeper for the job, it could be Avery Johnson. I'm also hearing some Brad Stevens chatter. This will be a fun one.

I'm not sure the pressing style works without superior talent. Obviously you can pull it off at a place like UL and perhaps UT but it's hard to really build programs at places like Minnesota or Alabama with that style.
