What's your minimum for him to keep his job? 8-4 regular season? 7-5 with a win over either us or MSU? What if he goes sub-.500 in conference play again?

Patience.

Generally you give a coach long enough to recruit "his players".

However, if a coach is unable to recruit the kids he needs I think you need to let him go on indefinitely.
