Rich Rodriguez (official thread of last laughs)

There were a couple of them. He sure went to his nostrils a lot during that press conference. Either Ann Arbor really does stink or he did a line of blow off a hookers ass before he walked in there.

or he was lying out of his ass and isn't very good at hiding his "tell"

when im running voluntary 7 on 7 drills. you honestly think i wouldn't want the qb coach on hand? the wr coach? dbs...? if you have the choice would you honestly say you wouldn't want a coach available to give you tips and let you know when your doing something wrong?

as far as minimal gain is conscerned. if my opposition is taking sundays off and im not... thats a full day every week i gain on them. even if all im doing is having them lift and run in the morning, film study in the evening and team meetings at night... that still puts me a full day up on the opponent. thats a HUGE advantage. would there be concern for overworking the guys and not giving injured players enough rest to heal? absolutely. but coming off a 3-9 season...? i doubt that would be a significant concern.
In light of the hypothetical I suggested, your first paragraph makes no sense. I never suggested that a player "wouldn't want" a coach to observe voluntary practice. What I suggested was the scenario in which a player (with possible prompting from the head coach) specifically requested it. The question here is whether everyone would do it, and that's ultimately up to the coaching staff, not to the players. And yes, I think there are circumstances where the players would not ask a coach to be present, whether out of personal preference, or whether out of the a priori knowledge that it's out of the question.

And whether any particular gain is "minimal" or not is obviously completely subjective. But you're not talking about a full day per week of additional practice. What you're talking about is the head coach getting feedback directly from a QC coordinator, rather than from the usual back channel of getting it from a trainer, or from a veteran player who was present. The former is perhaps somewhat easier, but I'd regard it as minimal gain.

BB73, I read this in the following way:

  1. I am now officially throwing Barwis under the bus. If the NCAA investigates this, I will claim ignorance and throw Barwis under the bus. It's about him, not me.
  2. We're going to uphold traditions. Expect a minimum of three losses.

Exactly what I thought when I read BB73 transcript.

Just for shits and giggles I thought I would put on my UM hat (wrapped in plastic of course because of all the different ways I have abused it over the years) and try my hand at defending RR.

1. Everybody does do it. We know that the turn out for 7 on 7s and winter work outs is pretty universal at OSU and peer pressure alone isn't enough to get out of town players to show up for summer training sessions. JTs advantage over RR may be one of subtlety. If RR has sinned it is only in degree (10 hour Sunday does seem a bit extreme) and in sending staff to witness sessions. Is that really such a crime?

2. The high GPA being reported is relevant. It does reflect a genuine commitment to academics. Are the majors weak? Sure. But they always have been among football players, so a spike in the number is still a spike in the number. And to be objective, Katzenmoyer was certainly closer to the norm at OSU than Krenzel.

3. Perhaps the "revolt among the players" aspect is being over sold as well. In at least the case of the two Frosh, the FREEP reporter who did the story did not ask them if they were being abused. He simply asked how they spent the summer. Their response was a description of their commitment - not an effort to undermine the coach. This may be true of others as well.

4. RRs reputation as a man of integrity is above reproach. Oh my gosh. What is happening. The pain in my chest. Good Lord, somebody help me. Wait...

Still an ass.

There, that's better.

Perhaps RR is a victim of sorts. (Even I would agree that the attention being paid this issue is - thanks to the timing - a bit overblown. And it isn't like the poor guy has the authority to raise the terrorist threat level as a distraction).

But if you look at the history of NCAA sanctions as often as not folks didn't get busted because they were that much worse than the next guy. It was because they were arrogant or careless. Because they left sustainable evidence. (Capone went to prison for tax evasion after all.)

And from my perspective, if RR and UM do suffer because of all this (to be sure, they already have) that such suffering may not be fully deserved doesn't mitigate the situation. It makes it all the sweeter.

Feldman summed it up best: UM has no leaders.

"Florida has Tebow to make sure everyone is showing up and putting in their work"

(paraphrased from the OTL on right now)
This is a good point, though probably a bad example given Tebow spends his summers in Thailand. I'm sure Tebow isn't organizing 7-on-7s while doing his missionary work.

Actually, it's the Philippines (the other pedophile dream country), IIRC.

It's amazing that he can do all of that and still have time to sit on the right hand of his father for all eternity...

Oh8ch was right on with his post here. I just finished watching "OTL" on ESPN and it was sad to an extent. But to watch RR shed tears in trying to explain his efforts, well............i certainly have mixed emotions about that.
I am an avid follower of Ohio State Football and i have always hoped and prayed that none of this would ever happen to Ohio State. But the bottom line in all of this is are we going "Overboard" in the efforts of College football ? Its great to have a great season for your favorite team but my goodness, how far do we reach if we are not sucessfull. Michigan fans are tearing out there hair if they lose another game. Especially to OHio State.
As Ohio State people we were there in the 90's and now all is well to a certain degree. I love football as much as anyone else but my goodness how far are we going to extend ourselves to all this frustration and madness. I hope that all of us as followers of OHio State Football can hope and trust that we don't go down the path that Michigan is headed for.
