Rich Rodriguez (official thread of last laughs)

If this was happening to OSU my main concern would be that there appears to be no shortage of players willing to talk to any reporter, or likely investigator, that asks them a question.

When they start forming lines to rat you out and you just finished your righteous indignation/I am 100% innocent speech to the media you just might have a problem.

U-M story about to appear on SportsCenter.

This is probably the first time Michigan football has made the highlights within the first 15 minutes of SportsCenter since Appalachian St.
Nah, I seem to remember them being one of the big stories after the Toldo debacle too.

Clearly they aren't "all in"...

Balderdash. How is Richie going to run his offense in the NFL? He isn't an never has been on the NFL radar. He's the definition of a system college coach.

RR was an NFL assistant before he coached in college. RR has plenty of connections in the NFL and will land somewhere. There is no college program that will touch him after all of these miscalculations (character flaws). My point is more along the lines that RR will be coaching in the NFL because that will be the only place left that will take him.

RR coached Shaun King at Tampa Bay, I believe.

I really do think that RR and Weis are bad for Ohio State football. I love seeing these guys lose and, because we don't get a chance to directly affect their outcome, I really do want to make sure that Notre Dame has a minimum of three losses every year.

Still, when TSUN have been a Big Ten power for decades and are losing to Toledo and App State, it reflects badly on the Big Ten, diminishes The Game, and hurts Ohio State's chances for a NC/BCS berth. We wouldn't be hearing all of this nonsense about the SEC if traditional powers in the Midwest were impressing with their performance.

The best thing for us is that TSUN and Ohio State enter The Game undefeated every year, that we beat them convincingly in The Game, and then both teams win their bowl games.

Now, if you are someone who likes to see TSUN fans squirm, just think back to what it felt like when John Cooper was coach and The Game came up every year. Sailing along easily beating your opponents, top 5 ranking, then losing The Game. Now compare that to Tressel's only loss to TSUN in a rebuilding year. Which hurt you more?

So, in my mind, the faster RR fails at TSUN, the better.

Davey me lad, ye seem to be lackin' much knowledge of Jackie Sherrill and Jerry Tarkanian. There be plenty of room in the colleges fer folks who can be winnin' some games and bringin' in the gold. Blackbeard could find a home if his team could put 50 on the board against the likes of Toledo and find the dubloons at the end of the Rainbow Bowl. Arrrrrrrgh!

While this situation looks bad for Michigan, it really is done across the country...minus the Sundays.
And that's the crux of the matter. Not only were the Sunday sessions excessive udner any standards (voulntary of mandatory), but given the context of Michigan's season, it also seems like RichRod was punishing his own players for losing games.

3. There may be (and almost certainly are) upperclassmen on this team who do not like what they have gone through the past year and a half but did not transfer - and they suddenly have leverage. Not the kids who talked to the FREEP, but kids who are thinking now may not be such a bad time to do so. Even those who bleed Maize and Blue have to be asking "Am I doing what is best for UM football by toeing the line, or is the best thing to lobby for change."
Good point - see below.

4. These kids have parents who may have been sitting on the sidelines for the past year and a half thinking "Gee, this seems kind of harsh, but I guess this is college football" who are now thinking "Hey, that's my kid. What kind of parent am I? How have I been letting them do this without saying anything."
The parents could be a big factor here, and they are much more likely to "blow the whistle" than the players.

John Mackovic's Arizona team turned on him midway through year two, and the mutiny was lead by upper-classmen.

The similarities between Mackovic's situation and R-Rod's are striking, including the fact they both cry like little bitches during bad losses and at post game press conferences. Remember, Mackovic's biggest sin was his players quit when he ran them 'til they dropped, and that didn't translate into 10 win seasons.
Great analogy. I had forgotten all about the Mackovic ordeal, but it seems like RichRod is in the same boat now. As Oh8ch said, how long before the current players start lobbying for change in order to better the program long term?

Certainly there are voluntary work outs at OSU where players are expected and pressured to be there. I would imagine as well that any kid who chose to ignore them would feel an impact on the depth charts.

We have to keep in mind that the issue is not working out endlessly, it is being required by the staff to do so.

Many of the UM player comments so far are simply that they did work out, not that a coach specifically told them to. However, some comments do cross that line and provide the more direct connection that would lead to a violation.

UM in now starting an internal investigation ( Michigan investigating alleged NCAA violations - College Football - Rivals.com ). To become a problem that investigation has to show that direct connection and it is certainly going to be a case of "he said/she said". My gut is telling me that RR may have pushed a bit too far and - particularly with the transfers - left a bit too much evidence of that direct connection.

On the other hand, these internal groups are not generally motivated to look too hard for such evidence. It is the components of the NCAAs "self policing" policy that makes it such a farce.

This is where I go back to the question of how much the administration is motivated to give RR get a pass.
