NEW COACH, NEW STYLE
Rodriguez brings spread offense from West Virginia to Michigan

By ZACH SILKA
BLADE SPORTS WRITER

ANN ARBOR - A brand-new coach and a brand-new style of football arrived at the University of Michigan yesterday.Rich Rodriguez was formally introduced as the 18th coach in the history of the Michigan football program, along with a much different offensive philosophy than Wolverine fans have become accustomed to seeing under retiring coach Lloyd Carr. Rodriguez, 44, spent the last seven seasons as the coach at his alma mater, West Virginia, where he led the Mountaineers to a 60-26 record, four Big East titles and six consecutive bowl bids. Stepping to the podium in a blue pinstripe suit with a silver block M lapel and a navy and yellow necktie that was a little more Mountaineer gold than Michigan maize, Rodriguez brought with him a wealth of knowledge in the no-huddle spread offense.

And running the spread offense at Michigan, Rodriguez said, is the only way for him to go about his tenure here.

Bob Hunter commentary: Michigan should just admit that wins matter

Tuesday, December 18, 2007 5:29 AM
By Bob Hunter

At least one Michigan newspaper tried to toss a lasso the size of West Virginia around Rich Rodriguez's background to make him a kind of Michigan Man. "Rodriguez isn't the traditional 'Michigan Man,' but he does have one significant tie to the school," Eric Lacy wrote in The Detroit News. "He was a defensive back and assistant under former West Virginia coach Don Nehlen, who was an assistant for three years under Bo Schembechler."
This isn't a knock on Lacy; the death of the Michigan Man concept should be mourned by anybody who thinks the grand old college game has become one juiced on steroids. But by that flimsy standard, just about anybody who has ever worn a whistle around his neck is Rodriguez's kind of Michigan Man.

If RR institutes the spread option in AA, I'll be interested to see how long his QBs last. Pat White didn't last the season in WVU, and it impacted the NC run. I think that RR will need to adjust to more of a traditional spread attack (as he used at Tulane) to be successful per TSUN's standards. Losing a couple every year due to injured QBs will get old for the fans (and recruiting). I think he will adapt - RR seems to be adept at modifying his style to fit the situation.

I know lots of coaches would do it, but there are numerous others that would not. Calling kids and asking them to switch their committments to the school you are going to is wrong, IMO. Drod is going to leave WVU in the worst possible state he can. Could you ever see Tressel pulling a move like that?

Article - DFP - Rosenberg - Rodriguez's Transition Bigger than He Expects

MICHAEL ROSENBERG: Rodriguez is making a bigger transition than he expects

December 18, 2007

Rich Rodriguez's to-do list:
1. Iron out the final details on his contract.
2. Remember not to call the Diag "the quad."
3. Learn how to spell "Schembechler."
4. Forget how to spell "Schembechler." Around here, "Bo" is enough.
5. Coach football.
I assume Rodriguez will handle tasks One through Four with ease. Let's delve into what will happen when he actually starts coaching Michigan.
Like Schembechler did in his two decades at U-M, Rodriguez spends almost all his time working with his offense.
....
Rodriguez is making a big transition, bigger than he probably realizes. He hit all the right notes Monday when he talked about Schembechler, Lloyd Carr and the tradition at Michigan. But he also underplayed the difference between the Big East and the Big Ten.
If Rodriguez retains a few of Carr's assistants, they can make the transition easier. They can also help him figure out if his defense will work in the Big Ten.
Either that, or he can wait to learn from Jim Tressel.

I really don't believe you guys. Less than a heartbeat into his new tenure as the head coach of the Michigan Wolverines and already you guys are poking fun at his wife's weather-worn look and Jerry Springer fashion sense. You haven't even spared poor little Rhett and Raquel the implied swipe. Less than two bloody days and look at you...

I love this place, really, sometimes its a bit overwhelming :slappy:

Perhaps Rodriguez shouldn't have gone to Buckeye boards for definitions of what constitutes the character of a "Michigan Man" - what a hypocritical sleaze bag.

The other side of the story, of course, is that things were being done, just not as fast as Rodriguez had hoped. Which leads me to the conclusion that this is a brazen attempt to overcome the $4 Million burden - with, I strongly suspect, TSUN's tacit support.
