Rich Rodriguez (official thread of last laughs)

Well, there is an assumption in my comment that he might have to ease into the new system. Damn, they are just horrible right now.
Yeah, but I doubt Dick would do that. I guess Threet and Mallett both ran a version of the spread in HS, but they seem like more of a pocket passer to me. From what I've seen, Threet has a decent enough arm, but DR still insisted of trying to pound him into a spread-option QB. Probably would've done the same with Mallett.

Me thinks he could have improved his chances significantly this season had he tried a little harder to hang on to Ryan Mallett

I 100% agree. Their passing game was horrific this year. At least they could have thrown it around.

The funny thing is, before Mallet left, Michigan fans all claimed Rodriguez would be able to tailor his offense to a passing QB. When Mallet left, they all said he wasn't a good fit.

So this year they ran the spread offense with QB's who were terrible fits, and next year they have to re-teach it to a new QB.

It's going to take Rodriguez at least 2-3 more years to get any traction at all up there. Will he get that much time?

Rodriguez expects turnaround

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

If Rich Rodriguez's plan is successful and Michigan returns to college football's elite, he knows how he'll view his 2008 debut as Wolverines coach.
"Hopefully, it'll be remembered as a blip on the screen, a one-time happening," he said after a 42-7 thrashing yesterday by Ohio State. "That's the hope."
Rodriguez expected his first season in Ann Arbor would be tough, but he didn't necessarily anticipate a 3-9 record. He remains optimistic that the tide will turn.
"We're close in a lot of ways but we still have a lot of work to do," Rodriguez said. "I'll evaluate everything and see how we can improve. You do that every year, even after a successful year. But certainly there's more of a sense of urgency now, and we'll get back to work tomorrow."

I wish those scUM boards archived their threads like BP. I'd love to go dig up all those threads predicting their wins for this year. Few, if any, of them thought less than 8-9 wins. A few lunatics were even saying 10-11 wins. :slappy:

Let's face it on 29 Aug 2008 most of us would have predicted around 8 wins for scUM with wins over the following:

Utah
Miami (Ohio)
Notre Dame
Illinois
Toledo
Purdue
Minnesota
Northwestern

and loses to:

Penn State
Wisconsin
Michigan State
Ohio State

Isn't it great that we were wrong.

What's amazing is just how bleak the future is. The scUM faithful could deal with one season like this. But what happens if next season is just as bad? Hell, it could be worse. Their offense should be better (how on earth could it possibly be worse?), but they still have to break in a new QB. They should improve in most areas on offense but their QB scenario will still be an absolute nightmare.

And on defense.. they lose everything. Their defense will be another nightmare. It will get worse much more than their offense will improve probably. What will the alumni do when they don't make it to a bowl AGAIN?

I was saying back in April U-M was going to get all they could handle right out of the gate with Utah. HTM even took me to task for it ... something about Utah not being "gaint killers," although that ignored the fact the U-M isn't a "giant" anymore either.

Really, if there was one thing I did learn this year, it's to wait for HTM to make his predictions, then bet opposite those. :tongue2:

Virginia won't win a game this year ...
Michigan WILL NOT lose to Toledo ...
You guys can question Rich Rodriguez's character, but it's not like he's a bad coach!!! ...

Early in the 1st quarter did any of you see the incident on the Michigan sidelines involving players and the coaches arguing between themselves
over what type of defensive set to run in? It was quite a scene and at that point I knew they were in deep trouble. I wonder how this is going to turn out for Rodriguez and his staff. It sure does not look good for the future.
