Michigan AD Martin 'totally supportive' of Rodriguez

ANN ARBOR ? University of Michigan athletic director Bill Martin on Tuesday placed his full support behind first-year football coach Rich Rodriguez, whose leading a team that's off to its worst start in four decades and is coming off one of the most stunning losses in program history to Toledo last week.

"Of course, yes, there is no question I am totally supportive of Rich," said Martin, who hired Rodriguez away from West Virginia in December. "Was I surprised with the loss last Saturday? Sure. No question. But I think he is the right man for this program at this time."

The Wolverines lost for the first time in program history to a Mid-American Conference school last Saturday when it was dropped 13-10 at home by the Rockets. At 2-4, UM is off to its worst start since 1967.

Rodriguez was the first Wolverines coach hired from outside the program since Bo Schembechler prior to the 1969 season. He's replacing Lloyd Carr, who retired following last season after 13 years, 122 wins, one national championship and five Big Ten titles.

UM, which plays at No. 3 Penn State on Saturday, is in serious jeopardy of snapping its string of 33 consecutive bowl appearances.

"Lloyd left a wonderful legacy with the program, but there were some significant holes from graduation where we didn't have the upperclassmen to fill in those positions," Martin said. "We've had to play freshmen, and you can see some of the results of having to do that. You always have to, when you're sitting in my seat, look at long term. You can't look at instant gratification."

Rodriguez is coaching at UM without an official contract, but he signed a six-year, $15 million offer sheet Dec. 16. Additionally, the university had to pay $2.5 million to West Virginia as part of a settlement regarding his contract there ? a settlement that wasn't agreed to until a months-long legal fight that took place almost entirely in public.

Additionally, some UM players with remaining eligibility chose not to return to the program under Rodriguez, while another one transferred to Ohio State and said the Wolverines' family values had eroded on his way out the door.

Martin said the e-mails he's received have been overwhelmingly positive, despite the mess fans are witnessing on the field.

The Wolverines, who are starting a freshman quarterback, running back, tight end, center and receiver on offense, are ranked 109th nationally in total offense and tied for 114th in turnover margin.

They managed not to lose a fumble for the first time all season against UT but threw three interceptions in that game.

"There's no silver bullet. Well, there is one thing ? turnovers," Martin said with a chuckle. "Go back and look at the games and tell me how you think they would've come out with less turnovers. That's what I'd like to see improve.

"In terms of Rich's leadership of this program, I am totally supportive of it."

A carefully worded statement of support--note that he isn't necessarily the right man for this program for a long time to come. Just "at this time"--and remember that by the time this quote hit the media, it was dated.

I don't think he's going anywhere this year or next. They bought into this guy big and it would be too much of an embarrassment to let him go.

Now, if Martin gets fired or "retired", all bets are off.

I agree. Everyone understood that there was going to be some growing pains while RR installed his new system. It's one thing talking about the growing pains and it's another thing to actually watch it unfold on Saturdays. Next year will be crucial. This year he could be 0-3 in rivalry games (OSU, ND, MSU). That's not a good way to start. Will he have a QB to run his system next year? What will happen next year if he is 0-3 again against those same teams?

Assuming he goes, which I don't think he will, what happens to the $4M buyout from WVU? scUM paid $2.5M of that, and they're going to want it back. From what I read of RR's finances a few months back, he can't afford that. Unless Clemson agrees to take over the debt. However, would Clemson take over the debt when RR has proven to be so fickle? Which brings me back to, even if he wanted to, he couldn't leave.

I doubt Clemson could assume any debt born by RR, since it's buying out Bowden at 3.5 Million over 6 installments. Tack on RR's 2.5 and you have Clemson paying 6 Million for a coach they don't have (Bowden and RR's WVU Rollover) Not to mention, Michigan's chunk RR would owe them if he left which Clemson would have to pick up some how (in all likelihood)... on the other hand... If Michigan and RR still don't have a signed deal... RR wouldn't owe Michigan anything if he left (if we consider the 2.5 million as a seperate matter)

There is absolutely no way that anyone is looking at RR right now. Once you make the hire, you have this thing drag out in the press for how long?

Take the case where you did hire him. RR makes the move and his image slides even lower. Would you sign on to his program if you were a top recruit after two moves so fast and his lack of accomplishments at TSUN? Would you send your kid to him? Probably not and that gives rise to the question, "how can you turn a program around if you can't recruit top players?"

This suggests that he most likely would not be a fantastic success. If he's not, you end up justifying why you hired the bugger.

It just isn't going to happen anywhere where an AD has half a brain. Too much personal risk for the AD.

TSUN has him. He's all theirs, for at least the next year.

The tags for this thread are still fantastic:

"barwis!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, buyout, creepy, double-wide, hair plugs, herb tarlek, hill jack, jimmy crum hand-me-downs, lawsuit, leisure suit, mac fail, master shredder, my team is soft, potty mouth, scum, snake oil, still an ass, wizard hat"

Yup. Pretty much sums up The Rod.

Actually, there are 11 on the field on every play. I've been wrestling with what I like more, UM straight sucking, or OSU ruining an otherwise good season. I've come to this conclusion, the meltdown is cool for one year, and one year only. I enjoy watching UM lose to Toledo, but if they pull the same bullshit next year, there's something seriously wrong. If UM is as bad next year, then RR is a bust. His shtick ain't gonna fly in the Big Ten. It's a whole different game than the big east.
