Rich Rodriguez (official thread of last laughs)

I do actually have a job which sometimes doesn't even involve a computer.

And OK, I got called out a bit on McCollough's alma mater....obviously, I don't bother checking the bios of every writer I quote. Still: The guy is not a blogger. He's a writer for a major newspaper that has to get vetted by an editor. And it's more than possible to find pieces on Rodriguez from all sorts of other sources (Chicago Tribune, Minneapolis Star Tribune among others that I've found) that don't trash the guy either. Yes, I do believe it's only in OH and WV that he's as badly despised as you guys do. "I live in State X" doesn't cut it because you're still a Buckeye fan. I'm sure somebody will be able to say "well I live outside those states and people I've met hate him," and I can say "I live outside Michigan, and people I've met don't hate him."

First, HTM, don't be so naive about the press and how much attention is going into articles. On slow news days, you need filler. An innocuous article about a coach outside the region fills the gap. You can bet that the TSUN sports administration folks also have their PR campaign people out there banging on every door that they can with advertorial. This guy has been a real ding on your collective sports and University rep.

Think about it a moment. Why would people hate a college football coach that is outside their regions and whose teams never play their teams? Especially if they are your friends or co-workers? Indeed, why would people, who are not college football fans, care one way or the other about him? Why would people want to say something negative about your coach, even if they did think he was a tool?

Go back in the Notre Dame threads and look at what posters here said about Charlie Weis early on in his first season. Look how the Notre Dame fans defended him, in fact, said many of the things that TSUN fans have said in this thread.

If you want to know what folks think about your coach, may I suggest a better barometer?

I have been all over the US in recent years. Most of the time, when I have mentioned that I am an Ohio State football fan, people have made some positive comment about Jim Tressel pretty quickly. It was that way before he played his first game and stood up despite the smears of the ESPiN Clarett debacle.

Hearing lots of unprompted positive statements about your wonderful new coach?

Columnist: Earth to Rich Rodriguez - OSU is your top rival

FREE PRESS STAFF AND NEWS SERVICES ? August 27, 2008
Jon Spencer of the Mansfield News Journal wrote a column about Rich Rodriguez and where the Ohio State rivalry stands on his priority list. An excerpt:
Look who's wearing the lamp shade now. It was bad enough that disgraced Michigan football coach Gary Moeller -- last seen in Ann Arbor getting pink-slipped after drunk and disorderly conduct -- refused to acknowledge Ohio State as a bigger rival than Michigan State.

Worse, Rich Rodriguez, entrusted with making the Wolverines more than a chew toy for the Buckeyes, is spouting the same sacrilege, insisting the circle around OSU on the calendar isn't any bigger than the one around Notre Dame or Michigan State.

The best part..

Too much for Rodriguez to wrap his mind around the fact that the last six Michigan coaches, going back 70 years, won in their first try against Ohio State.

"I can see people bringing that up, especially since this is my first one," he said. "But did you see 'The Lion King?' A monkey hits a lion over the head and the lion says, 'What did you do that for?' And the monkey says, 'It doesn't matter. It's in the past.'

This analogy works for me. RR is the monkey, JT is the lion, but he won't buy the monkey's garbage about the past not mattering.

Does any of this really matter? What will the country's imagine, even in Ann Arbor, be when RR's team goes to 3-5 after losing to Michigan State?

But we're not going to lose to Michigan State, so I fail to see the relevance. I know this board LOVES them some Mark Dantonio, but do we have any evidence that he's a good coach with a 24-22 career record? OOOOOOOO he changed the cuilture of MSU. Really? I'm pretty sure MSU was rabidly obsessed with beating Michigan before. I'm pretty sure MSU has been starting off hot against LOL CREMEPUFFS!!!!!!!!!111 and falling off the face of the Earth for quite a few years now. Call me when MSU isn't Same Old Sparty.

You do realize that if they do lose to MSU this year this is going to come back to haunt you......

Right, because UM didn't narrowly avoid defeat in any recent tilts vs Sparty, with more experienced and talented rsoters :roll2:

Care to point out where they collapsed and gave up like past years? Same ole sparty has a breaking point and then rest of the season they practically give up. Losing every game by 1 score doesn't compute with your theory, especially when many of those close losses are vs Wisconsin, OSU, and charging back to beat PSU.

Ole Sparty lays down and gets whipped when Wisky keeps coming back and breaking their hearts by going ahead. They don't keep rallying after every score. They lay down and get slaughtered when OSU goes up big, they don't fight back and make a game of it.

But it fits your hopes for Sparty to call them that, so almost all of your fans do so.

He doesn't even have to be a good coach to beat this years Michigan team.

Does it matter if you "almost" beat a team? Maybe if you're Notre Dame and you're trying to justify Charlie Weis' contract, then yes, "almost" counts. Other than that, no one gives a shit if you "almost" won. Do I gain solace because Michigan has "almost" beat Ohio State in some recent games? Um, I'm gonna go ahead and say no. So yeah, if almost wins count, then Michigan State is awesome.

Michigan State jumped out to yet another quick start last year against a clusterfuck of terrible teams. UAB, Bowling Green, Pitt, and Notre Dame. Quite the fearsome foursome there. After that, they went on their patented mid-season slide, going 3-6 in that stretch with wins over Indiana, Purdue and Penn State. That includes losses to Northwestern (?!?!?!) and Iowa, amongst others. Gee, I can't see why I'm not chugging the MSU kool-aid along with everyone else.

Every single year, MSU starts strong against bullshit teams, get their heads full of hot air and think they're going to beat Michigan. How's that working out for them lately?
