Rodriguez hopes settlement puts controversy behind him
By JOE VARDON
BLADE SPORTS WRITER
CHICAGO - Rich Rodriguez said yesterday he reached a $4 million settlement with West Virginia earlier this month because "everybody wanted to get it done before the season" starts. Rodriguez, now the football coach at Michigan, was being sued by his former employer over a disputed $4 million buyout clause in his contract there. He discussed his settlement for the first time publicly at yesterday's Big Ten media conference at the Hyatt Regency Chicago. The agreement - which calls for Rodriguez to pay West Virginia $1.5 million in three installments beginning in 2010 and UM to pay $2.5 million by the end of this month - was approved by West Virginia's board of governors July 9. At the time, UM athletic director Bill Martin said the agreement put the lengthy, bitter, legal fight between Rodriguez and his former employer in the past. As expected, the whole mess was again front and center for Rodriguez yesterday. And, as expected, he fielded the questions about the settlement with an eye toward putting the matter behind him. "There are a lot of things I would like to talk about, but I want to move on," Rodriguez said. "That's one of the biggest reasons that everything got settled, because I think everybody wanted to move on. It's in the past.

CHICAGO -- Rich Rodriguez described his last seven months as having had "a little bit of drama." You don't say.
"If I paid a whole lot of attention to a lot of the stuff that was written, it probably would have been a little bit tougher," the embattled new Michigan coach said yesterday at the Big Ten preseason meetings. "But after a while, it was like, 'Just stand in line and throw some darts our way.' "
Rodriguez has had plenty of reasons to duck.
West Virginia sued Rodriguez for breaking his contract. He finally reached a settlement July 9 to pay his former school $4 million, most of which came out of Michigan's pocket.

DFP: Off-season drama still plagues Rodriguez

Off-season drama still plagues Rodriguez

BY MARK SNYDER

CHICAGO -- When the Big Ten football coaches met in May, Rich Rodriguez was the new guy.

As the only first-year head coach in the conference, one could imagine him sitting back and soaking up the knowledge.

But, as Michigan fans have quickly learned, that's just not his style.

[...]

Standing at the podium wearing a blue shirt and yellow tie, he addressed everything and little of it was about football, though not by his choice.

Questions in and out of the interview room came about the lawsuit he recently concluded with West Virginia (he was disappointed he never got to clear his name), about the team's current personnel issues (Kevin Grady's suspension and Marques Slocum being cut from the team) and about the players not with the team (Justin Boren, Ryan Mallett and Pryor not being Wolverines).

Even when Rodriguez seemed to be in the clear, past the lawsuit questions and defections, he was asked about the "family values" charges leveled by Boren.

"I'm as proud how our coaches coach as any place in America," said Rodriguez, adding "we don't enable them, we coach them.

"I think that is overrated. I don't know where all that came from. Sure, when coaches are upset sometimes there's some salty language, but some of them don't use it at all and some of them use it occasionally. But it's not like a tirade all the time. So I don't know what you all think here or believe, but it's not like that. Again, I think that's just somebody piling on."

Rodriguez tried to steer the conversation to the positives and proudly said he stays true to his style of running the program. He explained about his "apostles," a leadership group of 20 players he had over to his house for a Wednesday night barbecue, talking about team issues.

[...]

ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit addressed the off-season drama, specifically Boren's departure to Ohio State, hoping Rodriguez can put this all behind him.

"I'm a little concerned right now for Rich," said Herbstreit, adding he felt Boren was too public in his piling on. "There's a lot of negative things adding up. They need to start the season and win some games to get some positive stuff going, some mojo going, because it's not good right now."

A reading from the book of Rich:

.......Then the angels came down from the heavens in dazzling white and blazing glory. The angels asked the apostles "what does it mean to be a Michigan man?" The Apostles responded "it fucking means we are the baddest motherfuckers on the fucking planet and we have a MMA-fightin-wolf owning bad mother fucker teaching us to knock a mother fucker the fuck out".........and Rich was pleased.

... Helwagen asked him about the rivalry. He went on to say they had many big rivalries in ND, MSU, and OSU. He treats them all the same. His players hear enough from the fans to know that those are the big games they must win. It sounded eerily similar to a former OSU coach. :wink2:

CHICAGO - In one regard, new Michigan football coach Rich Rodriguez expects Ohio State to be the easiest game on the schedule.

"As coaches, the rivalry games are the easiest to get ready for because players hear about it all the time," said Rodriguez, attending his first Big Ten Media Days convention Thursday after spending the last six years as head coach of his alma mater, West Virginia.

"Obviously, you don't coach or live in Michigan without understanding the rivalries. At Michigan, we're sort of unique in that we have three of those rivals in Ohio State, Michigan State and Notre Dame. My first day on the job I found a button on my desk that said, 'Beat Ohio State.' I think it's fun."

Now Jax, you're just piling on.

Now that everything has been laid on the table and the whole world has gotten a glimpse into what RR is all about I found this line the most telling.

"If the reputation has been damaged, that is upsetting because I've just changed jobs and done things the way I've done them everywhere else."

Enjoy scUM fans, he's a Michigan man now.
