Rich Rodriguez (official thread of last laughs)

Tiller steamed after losing top prospect (to RR)
Tough nuts. It might seem a little crummy to continue recruiting a guy once he's announced a verbal but there is absolutely no coach in the world who does not do that. In this case, it's not as though RR swooped in at the last minute as Tiller claims. There was already a relationship and maybe Roundtree wanted to play for RR but not go to West Virginia - once RR's situation changed, so did the recruiting.

Mark Dantonio was recruiting Dann O'Neill for months after his verbal to Michigan. I refuse to believe that Jeff Jags and Butch Davis were not putting in calls to Christian Wilson when the coaching change was made. Let's not act like calling recruits to try and get them to change their minds is some sneaky Rich Rodriguez thing. It's a sneaky every-single-D-IA-coach-in-the-world thing. That's the reality these days. We all know a verbal is, at best, a "probably."

I wonder what Tiller means about not going in "that building" again. Roundtree's high school?

from what it sounds like it does seem like he'll never go to that school again...

I think you're right somewhat, but not completely. You would say "tough nuts" and so would we until it happens to YOU! I shrugg it off but I know our fanbase and as well as michigans would be furious if a coach did this to our programs. Most coaches will stop calling, and things like that. Most coaches will just let the recruit know if they change their minds down the road that they'd love to have them, but usually they aren't active in recruiting them. Most of the time the coaches (the ones with any respect for other programs) will atleast make that player who just committed a non-priority but will just keep an eye on them. IMO, with Dick Rod being at Michigan for a short peroid of time it shows he was very active with trying to get the kid away from Purdue in a short peroid of time. Bad taste by Rich, but their's no rules that says you can't do that. It's just an un-written code that is normally common sense. Apparently that part of him stayed in WVU..

I think you underestimate how common it is. I don't think its an unwritten code at all. Recruiting often gets more intense once a kid commits because then other coaches know exactly what school to badmouth.

"On the other side of the coin, maybe the guy did you a favor. It makes you wonder about the guy, the people surrounding him, the people in that building who would let that happen. I can say this: We won't go back in that building again and we won't be the only institution not to."

Is he saying that Trotwood burned bridges with both Purdue and State Penn as a result of these 11th hour commitment switches.

On a side note, it is amazing how in such a short period of time how various players and coaches have called RRs trustworthiness into question recently

Off the top of my head I can think of Cameron Saddler, TP, Coach Tiller, Christian Wilson...

Just so you know, methomps, with Will Ferrell and Snoop Dogg hanging around, you'll never be Petey's #1 guy. He'll tell you that you are, but he's telling everyone that. If you want to be treated with the respect you deserve and get the status you merit, feel free to join us in Columbus. I know, I know, you've been with USC a long time, but you haven't signed anything official yet. There's still time to come home.

Interesting ... has anyone ever seen methomps and Phil Fulmer ....

"If we had an early signing date, you wouldn't have another outfit with a guy in a wizard hat selling snake oil get a guy at the last minute, but that's what happened,"
-Joe tiller about RR from the linked article.

 Well done (graphically). Looks like a billboard put up in West VA, with the hat sticking up.

Not sure if it was your handiwork or the original shadow, but his left collar flap looks like it has the bottle shadow.

HtM, I agree it's pretty common, on varying levels of pursuit. However I find this one a bit peculiar. (Pure speculation upcoming) I seriously doubt this was Tiller's first time having a big school swoop by late and steal a commitment. I don't remember him blowing up before about it (maybe I missed it).
I wonder what Tiller means about not going in "that building" again. Roundtree's high school?
So for him to boycott & slam the school, does that mean they were involved in dismissing the reality of Roundtree looking around? Or am I reaching? :p

And now for something completely different... was digging through the archives and came across this tidbit.

take this for what it is worth, but I thought this would be good to share, considering it is pretty speculative...from a poster on the BSB board:
apparently Coach Rod from WVU made some comments off the record to some reporters at his press conference yesterday that he was highly impressed with the way OSU went about recruiting Gwaltney. This was said in contrast to the way Petey Carroll went about things.

From what I'm told Rodriguez had high praise for Tressel and staff and their professionalism and their desire for Jason to make the choice that he felt was best for him and that he had their support as a young man either way. Also, OSU did not invoke negative recruiting tactics but instead focused on the positives of the OSU opportunity.

Petey, however, only wanted what was best for Jason as long as what it matched what was best for Petey.....and he went negative from the get go on WVU and OSU.....and in the end was less than gracious with Jason once he found out Jason was going to stick to his original commitment to WVU.
I'm sure we can look forward to long and awkward hugs at midfield after each game :p
