Rice player dies after workout

Tuesday, September 26, 2006
From staff and wire reports
A Rice University freshman football player died Monday, a day after collapsing during a light workout.
Dale Lloyd, a 19-year-old defensive back, collapsed on the field about 5 p.m. Sunday but was con scious when taken to a hos pital by ambu lance. He died about 9 a.m. Monday, school officials said.
"I just can't describe the pain we're feeling right now and the shock," Rice Athletic Director Chris Del Conte said. "It will take a long time to digest. The coaches are crushed. This is a tough time for all of us." Del Conte said Lloyd collapsed while the team was doing some light running. Although he didn't complain of anything specific, he told team trainers he didn't feel right.

It's unacceptable that this still happens. The coaches and trainers need to do a much better job of monitoring these kids.

And what signs did this kid show before he collapsed? It was a light workout. There appears to be other things here (undiagnosed medical problem, etc.).

Mid to low 80's, low humidity, light workout. Not even close to dangerous conditions.

If something was not noticed in his physical examination that cleared him for physical activity, what could the coaches and trainers possibly do?

How about getting the facts before you throw the staff under the bus.

There is times, where in my mind, I question what my coaches are actually doing. If they are pushing me or another player too far.

Again, we don't know the facts. So I think we should wait until all the facts come out.

Oregon, simmer down a notch (or 5.) My niece who is 14 was just diagnosed with a very serious heart condition. She is no longer allowed to do any type of activity that remotely raises her pulse rate until she has a corrective procedure done, otherwise, she could just collapse and die. Had something dire happened to her prior to this diagnosis it would in no way have been her coaches fault... sure, when someone dies it is natural to need a place to put the blame but I think it is with great fault you are holding the coaches responsible in this situation. I will be more than willing to eat crow if the details prove otherwise.

Regardless of the circumstances in this case, it is a tragedy when a young life is taken, no matter the reason or means.

Lets not lose sight of the fact that this thread is about a young man who has left behind a grieving mother and father who never could have imagined outliving their son.

His teammates have lost a brother and they are expected to carry on in his stead with his death hanging over potentially the best season in Rutgers football history. The coaching staff will be questioning themselves for a long time.

We can argue all day about coaches pushing too far and causing issues that are similar. But lets remember this thread is about Dale Lloyd and his grieving family.
