Rice Player Dies after Workout

Regardless of the circumstances in this case, it is a tragedy when a young life is taken, no matter the reason or means.

Lets not lose sight of the fact that this thread is about a young man who has left behind a grieving mother and father who never could have imagined outliving their son.

His teammates have lost a brother and they are expected to carry on in his stead with his death hanging over potentially the best season in Rutgers football history. The coaching staff will be questioning themselves for a long time.

We can argue all day about coaches pushing too far and causing issues that are similar. But lets remember this thread is about Dale Lloyd and his grieving family.

Agree Scooter... just hit a little too close to home, I lost the purpose for a second... thanks for getting this back on track.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family during this difficult time.

Well done...

It's unacceptable that this still happens. The coaches and trainers need to do a much better job of monitoring these kids.

Between the thousands of high school, college, and professional football teams out there, there are countless chances that something unfortunate could happen to a player like it did here. A player at my coach's old school passed out and died during one of his practices, and it still haunts him. There's no way you can really prevent the unpredictable from happening, and its just as devastating everytime it happens. I just hope that the parents, family, friends, and teammates of Dale can get through their loss, and know he is in a better place and that they know he went out playing the sport he loved, around the people that that he cared about and who cared about him.

Yea last year I had a teammate that passed out on the field. He ended up being alright, but it was certainly a scary situation. It was a hot day out, but not really bad. I don't know what really happened, we was doing bear crawls and he just fell over and wasn't moving. The coach that had us doing the workout was an real ass. He ran us alot. I know he was feeling real bad when he saw what happened.

I read that an autopsy was to be performed to determine the cause of death. If the cause of death still isn't known, I seriously doubt this could have been prevented.

I'm sure their staff is doubting, questioning and grieving enough without accusations.

After death, Rice will play Army

September 27, 2006
The Associated Press
HOUSTON -- Rice will play Army on Saturday as scheduled as a tribute to defensive back Dale Lloyd, who died Monday. "We're going to press on," Rice coach Todd Graham said Tuesday. "We're going to honor Dale on how we do everything we do the rest of the season."
Lloyd, 19, collapsed on the field about 5 p.m. Sunday during a light workout but was conscious when taken to a hospital by ambulance. He died about 9 a.m. Monday, school officials said. An autopsy was pending.
When the Owls take the field against Army, Lloyd's No. 39 will be affixed between the Owl wings on their helmets. The team will also take Lloyd's jersey to each of the games and plans to present it to his parents at the end of the season.
A heartbroken Graham said Tuesday that he didn't care about the game when he learned of Lloyd's death. But after talking to his players and several current and former coaches, including former Baylor coach Grant Teaff, Florida State's Bobby Bowden and Army coach Bobby Ross, he changed his mind.
