Retinal Detachment Surgery

Surgery was successful, but the gas bubble they injected into my eye is only about half dissolved, so another week largely face down. Probably a month or two before vision in that eye fully clears. Apparently, there's some form of permanent buckle wrapped around my eye, though he said I'll never notice that it's there.

Pup came home Monday morning. She can tell that I'm injured and won't leave my side. Anyone goes by on the sidewalk outside, and she's in the window barking them the fuck off.

Interesting. I understand the bubble, but how would they strap that on so you don't notice? Can you tell where they made the injection?

I have no idea about the physiology of what they did to me. I kind of preferred willful ignorance to actually knowing the details. Doctor is on staff at Northwestern and did his MD and Ph.D at Johns Hopkins, and that's all I really needed to know. But it's called a scleral buckle and goes around the white of the eye, which is why I won't notice it once my vision comes back in that eye.

I could have rubbed it the wrong way while sleeping that night. It could have just been a function of getting older and just decided to go. Or some combination of age and trauma. No way of telling.
You have something in common with Sugar Ray Leonard. He got his from too many shots to the head. Fact is, sometimes it just happens and doctors have no idea why. I have a friend who had a detached retina happen on a Caribbean cruise. Helicopter ride to Miami and in three days had the surgery, with recovery in an expensive hotel room. Doctors had no idea why a hole developed in my maculus in my left eye. Right eye has no problem. Weird.

My dad’s occurred just while out in the woods one day.

No trauma or agitation, just started getting a black spot in his vision.

Three weeks in, and I'm still doing face down most of the day. I had a follow up on Tuesday though, and everything is looking great. Sutures have all dissolved, and we're only waiting for the damned gas bubble to fully dissolve. Primary Care doc prescribed some Mother's Little Helpers to take the edge off my day, so I got that going for me.
Yeesh. Hang in there

Yikes. One thing that they may or may not have told you is that you are guaranteed to have a cataract in that eye within one year. The hits keep on coming, but it’s way better that losing sight in the eye.
