Reporting Live From Amsterdam

cincibuck

You kids stay off my lawn!
We traveled from Delft to Amsterdam by train yesterday. How civilized. We walked a bit to the Anne Frank House. I was surprised at the amount of space the family actually had to live in, but then you had to consider keeping quiet all day long to include not using the toilet between 7 in the morning and 7 at night. Not being able to ever go outside or even look out the windows. It was eerie to walk on the same floorboards, touch the handle that pulled the book case back into place to cover their secret stairway, to read an actual page from her diary and all the while seeing that enigmatic, innocent smile in her photo.

Amsterdam was gritty, grimy compared to, say, Munich. But you can get anywhere quickly by boat or tram and all of that connects back to the trains, which then connects to the airport.

The Dutch no longer support the excesses that brought about needle park and mary jo wanna is illegal, but tolerated. Thus there are Koffe houses where you can buy a cup of Joe and a doobie or a bag, and there are cafe's where you can get a strudle and a cup of coffee, but no mind altering substances.

We pack up tomorrow and head home in time to root the Bucks on to Victory.

You probably don't have time, but if you do, check out Boom Chicago near he original Bulldog at Leidsplain. Great comedy. I wish I could remember the name of the little mom and pop place we ate at that had such great soups. All I recall is it was on the north end of town, west of the red light by a block or two. It was on a corner. I could find it if I was there, but damned if I can recall the name.

I haven't been too many places in Europe, but Amsterdam was great. We saw the 2006 OSU-tsun game in the Satellite Sports Cafe, right next door to the Bulldog mentioned by BKB, on the Leidseplein. The place was packed with a couple hundred OSU and tsun fans (about 2/3s in Scarlet and Gray). One lonely group of a half dozen locals were also there trying to watch something they called "fotball." Best venue I could imagine if you have to see The Game from Europe.

And, yes, we did visit the Bulldog for the, uh, soup. 4 Thai reefers for 12 Euros. Couldn't even finish them all during our visit, so we left the last one as a tip for the hotel housekeeper.

Sounds like a great experience. What a sense of history you must have felt as you entered the Anne Frank house. I hope to visit one day, as well.

Have a safe trip home.

Go BUCKS!!!

Is satellite sports cafe still the place to catch college games? I'm not expecting to see osu/Akron but I do need my fix, especially after this offseason. We fly out of ewr (fingers crossed) on Wednesday and have an apartment for six days. South part of jordaan.

Forgotten I'd posted this. We were staying with our Godson and his wife, both Coast Guard officers, in the little berg of Delft-- yep, that Delft. Doug's a HUGE OSU fan and by 2008 was able to stream the games. Before that I would tivo the game, burn a disc and mail it to him. I would imagine that the streaming is much better now. Good luck, Stoic.
