Reds tidbits 2014 (official thread of windshield licking)

I thought it was worse until I saw the replay. Hamilton slipped trying to stop at 3rd and then had to get in the run down. He should have just kept going and probably would have scored.

The replay was sick though watching him turn it on near 2nd base. Geesh

Numbers never lie.

"There's a fine line between aggressive and nincompoopary -- and too often this year, the Reds have found themselves on the wrong side of it.

I've mentioned before the great site TOOTBLAN Tracker. As its name indicates, it tracks TOOTBLANs -- or Thrown Out On The Bases Like A Nincompoop. And this year, the Reds are leading baseball in TOOTBLANs with 68. The Brewers led baseball in 2013 with 82.

...

But it is noteworthy that the team's worst month -- July -- featured the most TOOTBLANs. There's a chicken and egg thing here, but a team with the fourth-lowest on-base percentage in baseball can't afford to give up outs on the bases when they're barely there. The Reds and Dodgers have made 53 outs on the bases, according to Baseball-Reference.com (which does not include force plays, pickoffs or caught stealing, while TOOTBLAN does include the other two), the most in the majors. The league average is 40 -- and the Giants have just 20. The Reds have made more outs at home (25) than the Giants have made on all four bases combined. No other team has 20 outs at home and the league average is 14.

The Reds lead the National League in caught stealing (42), pickoffs (15) and pickoff caught stealing (11).
