Reds Tidbits (2013 Season)

I guess I'd rather take Jim Day than hear George Grande's awful stories...Also, you guys remember every West coast trip where they'd weave in Ron Moss, Chris Welshs buddy who was on that soap opera.. That story rivaled the Manti Teo and Chuck Pagano cancer story for getting run in the ground...I mean every year they'd tell it like we developed Alzheimers in the offseason...

150+ games on FSN with that merry cast of douche bags is enough to annoy anyone..

I really hope he does. Chapman pitched in 68 games last year. As a starter he'd maybe see 30. Closers are worth their weight in gold and he's the best closer in the game today.

Closers are worth close to nothing. The difference between a mediocre closer and the best in the game is not much. A great closer is a luxury, not a must have, especially when your starting rotation has a hole to fill (yes Mike Leake, I am calling you a hole).

Until anyone comes up with an intelligent reason for the Reds not to do it, I sill say Leake as a long reliever and pinch hitter on the bench. He's one of the best athletes the Reds have on their entire major league roster and he can get the job done from that role.

If he would have had half of Stubbs' at bats last season he hits near .300

His BABIP last year was .410. He also does not walk very often. While Leake is a really good athlete and a good hitting pitcher, his slash line over a long enough timeline would probably be around .230/.250/.320. While a 570 OPS pitcher is fantastic, it's not exactly what you want to regularly trot out there in pinch hitting duties.

On top of that, Leake is still young and needs to be starting every five days. That would also mean you have a #6 starter ready to rock in case of injury, which is normally needed every single year (last year was an anomaly). LeCure is the perfect long man, and has actually thrived in the role proving he can not only be a long man but a short man when called upon. I am not sure the Reds would want to teach Leake how to be a reliever since he still has value as a starter and most likely has some room to improve.

I still have dreams of Walt trading Leake to the Pads for an apparent over pay on a one year rental of Headly then work his old St Louis magic and get him to sign an extension.

That little fantasy aside, I do think someone will get shipped out because you are starting to get a pitching logjam at the top of the minors and not enough MLB spots open to take them all. I know you always need depth but you can't realistically park 4 near ready guys at AAA for 3 years either. Maybe we could but it doesn't seem likely.

trying to think outside the box a little, I would consider trading not for MLB talent but some MiLB position talent, specifically corner IF/OF. Our system is somewhat barren in that area.

Regardless of what they actually do, the important thing to remember is that they will fail miserably at it and inflict many more years of pain and suffering on all of us.

Ugh.. Chapman doesn't even want to be starter... Great reds are gonna fuck this up so much

For those who haven't seen it

fter his start vs the Giants Saturday, Aroldis Chapman gave his most direct answer yet about his job preference between starting and closing: ?I would like to be the closer,? Chapman said via translator Tomas Vera. ?But it?s out of my hands.?

Fuck me running

It's a good thing he doesn't speak English because I am sure he has plenty more stupid things to say. Where is Crash Davis when you need him?

The worst thing is Dusty is all for it, and I have no doubt Dusty is doing his best to sabotage it (be it consciously or not).
