That was some [Mark May] weather. I can attend 3/4 of a college football season and not freeze my balls off as much as I did tonight. I'm a cold weather person, but with those high winds I couldn't stand to sit still in the nosebleeds. I spent the last six innings pacing around the concourse and watching from the railing behind the lower deck seats. I enjoyed watching the game from there - particularly if you stood in certain spots where you couldn't see anything outside of the stadium. Those views reminded me of Riverfront, which I'm still a little nostalgic for.
There are some new touches around the park that I like. They've added more variety to the concessions. They've added a few more video screens around the concourse. They've updated the scoreboard graphics - some for the better, some for the worse. I like how when a Reds pitcher strikes out an opposing batter, they shoot flames out of the stacks in CF.
I checked out Moerlein Lager House before the game. I think they're still getting their bearings, having just opened up and learning how to deal with the pre-game rush. They were slow to seat us and overestimated our wait time by 50%. I hadn't read too much about it beforehand, and ended up a bit disappointed at first that it's more of a restaurant than a bar. The food was good though, and the beer was great. There are a handful of Moerlein beers on tap, and a good selection of bottles from other breweries. There's a plaque in the floor commemorating the spot where first base once was in Riverfront Stadium. I think it's a little convenient that it happens to be right at the threshold of the dining area, right in front of the hostess' counter. The real spot is probably under some random table.
I seem to have some [Mark May] luck with my seats. It seems every time I go to the park in recent years I get stuck near some Eastern Bloc exchange student who is at a baseball game for the first time. They always have a host with them who is explaining every basic detail of the game to them. I wouldn't mind it so much if the host wasn't always some imbecile who doesn't know [Mark May] about baseball. That was the other reason I couldn't stay in my seat for more than three innings tonight. If I had to hear that guy explain the game of baseball to a guy, then seconds later jump out of his seat and get excited over a routine fly ball that he thought was going to be a home run, I would have kicked him in the back of his head.
I think Leake pitched well all things considered. He certainly did well enough out there to say that the Reds should have found a way to win. I want to be mad and dismissive of David Freese's wall-scraper power, but his wall-scrapers have helped win the first two games of this series, and last fall's World Series. I'd gladly take more weak-ass home runs like that from the Reds.
