Reds Tidbits (2012 Season)

I'm following the live thread on RZ. They were about to fucking riot over this pick. They all seemed to want Giolito, who conveniently got a head start on blowing up his elbow as a high schooler.

I'm following that thread as well. They started ripping the kid's intelligence level because in a recorded interview with MLB Network he quoted Happy Gilmore, said he played hockey and that his favorite pitcher was Roger Clemens. One poster said that there might be a few D.U.I.'s in Travieso's future, based on the 30 second recorded interview. It's ridiculous.

I don't mind the pick. It was probably a bit too soon to pick him, but based on what scouts say about his stuff, he seems to have just as good of a shot to make it to the big leagues as most other high school pitchers. Seems like the Reds did a fair amount of scouting on him, so hopefully he fulfills the potential the Reds see in him.

Sandwich pick #1 (49 overall): Jesse Winker OF Olympia (HS) Fla

Looks like a LH power bat destined for LF. His swing looked good in the brief video they showed. Pick was compensation for losing R. Hernandez as a free agent.

I have no skin in the game but last time I remember a good draft pick riot at RZ was when they took Stubbs over Lincecum.

The RZ egg heads were very high on The Freak and very suspicious of Stubbs.

Not that it turned out badly or anything, just saying.

That one was easier to figure out than this one. In that case it was 2 college players with lots of video and info. Here, I have no idea how anyone can argue. Heck, even if Giolito doesn't hurt his elbow it's damn near impossible to determine how great he will be. He is a high school pitcher that throws really hard. That is about it. The Reds took another high school pitcher that throws really hard (albeit not quite as hard).

High school pitchers are pretty much impossible to predict for the majors.

Here is the list of high school pitchers taken in the top 15 from 2000-2009 (too early for the other drafts)

Aaron Crow
Matt Purke
Tyler Matzek
Jacob Turner
Zach Wheeler
Ethan Martin
Aaron Hicks
Jarrod Parker
Madison Bumgarner
Phillippe Aumont
Luke Hochevar
Clayton Kershaw
Kasey Kiker
Mark Rogers
Homer Bailey
John Danks
Zack Greinke
Clint Everts
Christopher Gruler
Adam Loewen
Scott Kazmir
Dewon Brazelton
Gavin Floyd
Colt Griffin
Mike Stodolka
Matt Harrington
Matthew Wheatland
Mark Phillips
Joe Torres

If you said "who is that" for about 75% of those guys, you are not alone. There are some stars in there, sure. Yet most high school pitchers, even taken in the top 15, miss horribly. IIRC, even the stars on that list (which there are what, 3 maybe) were not the first one taken in the years they were drafted.

There is a reason teams have been shifting away from taking high school kids early. They have a way higher bust rate. Of course this draft did seem a little weak from the college level so I think some teams were willing to roll the dice on high schools kids more than they usually would.
