Why?

Votto has had some good season but IMO Votto is worth nowhere near the amount of money that Fielder or Pujols got

Votto is better than Fielder.

Votto however will hit the market at age 30, whereas Fielder hit the market this year at age 27.

My understanding is that Fielder is going to be making about $23 million a year in Detroit. Votto's current contract has him being paid $19 million next year. In a sense, that's good news, since the Reds are already planning to pay him in that range. Between now and the end of that contract both Arroyo and (possibly) Phillips will be coming off the books, and both of them are being paid around $12 million a year. That could be what gives the Reds the room to pay him long term.

To me it won't be a question of whether or not the Reds will be able to afford him, it's a question of whether or not that's a good idea (or whether or not he actually wants to be here after 2013). The answer to those questions will depend a lot on how the next two years shake out in terms of guys coming through the farm system, the competitiveness of the big league club and whether or not enough butt can be put in the seats to get some cash flowing into the Reds' budget for player salaries.

At the moment I'm leaning toward it being a good idea to try to re-sign him. That said, I'm prepared for him to be gone in two years for one reason or another. Prince Fielder's contract doesn't make me any less optimistic about the Reds chances to reach a new deal with him though.

No more Cordero was pretty much a given once Madson was signed. However I'm sure teh Duhsty got in Jocketty's ear and asked him to find $5 million to give to CoCo to caddy for Marshall in the 7th and 8th inning or something. Glad he's off the market now.

I read that Jon Heyman of CBS Sports compared him to Heath Bell. That's the dumbest thing we'll hear anybody say about the game of baseball until the next time Duhsty speaks.

to a lot of teams he is, I'd be shocked if he wasn't offered a deal somewhere between Fielder and Pujols money (closer to Fielder)

I don't think the Reds can afford to have a $220 Mil contract

Depending on how the Reds are doing, he'll be on the trade market sometime in 2013 or even 2012 if they suck massively
