Reds Tidbits (2011 Season)

If it's possible to make a statement this early in the season (other than, "We suck") the Reds just made it.

The Brewers might have a bullpen problem, and it's probably not going to get any better for them with Greinke out and Marcum possibly hurting or slow to recover.

Also, a high percentage of their runs in this series came from solo HRs.

Cardinals predictably bad offense takes a hit for awhile without Holliday (they won 2-0 today with 1 unearned and Garcia pitching a complete game) and have pitching issues everywhere after Carpenter and Garcia. Astros got the Phillies to open the season and struck out 27 times against just 1 walk, and that was intentional (of course the Phils rotation will do that to a lot of teams). Pittsburgh and Cubs are probably not going to seriously challenge the Reds, and we just saw how flawed this Brewers team is. Reds start the year with Majors easiest April schedule according to most. Great way to start the season.

How good are the Reds backstops?!?! No one ever talks about Hernandez/Hanigan but all they do is continue to produce, bigtime. Love it. And the youngsters waiting in the wings will have to continue to wait.

Last year Hanigan and Hernandez combined to hit .296 w/ 91 RBI. That's the best offensive production from a catcher in the majors who doesn't play in Minnehaha or Atlanta.

They are both good. Just depends if you want the one that will be cooler in the Summer or one that will be a little bit more of a classic feel/look. If you plan to go to a game often this Summer then the cool base is probably the best. Otherwise go with the regular one.

2011 salaries
Mauer-$23 MM
McCann-6.5MM
Hernandez-$3MM
Hanigan-$450 K

Well played Walt, well played. I now officially forgive you for Willy Tavaras (well ok not really but lets just forget about it).

Not a bad combo defensively either. According to the graphic on TV today they led the league last year in fewest passed balls allowed and were third in preventing SBs.

9 of 12 with 5R, 3HR, 7RBI, a BB, and 0Ks is a pretty good start to the season.
