Reds Tidbits (2011 Season)

I saw on MLBTR that Beltran is for sale. Also saw on RZ a while back someone noticed the Mets GM say he was at a Reds AAA game scouting.

Obviously the price would have to be right but that got me thinking, just how expensive could Beltran be? That no arb clause really puts the Mets in a tougher spot imo.

Obviously they are going to say they plan to resign him but fact is if he walk they get zilch. I'd offer something along the lines of a Heisey and they pay most of Beltrans salary and negotiate from there. The more cash that comes our way the more a second legit prospect goes their way.

Bottom line is they can trade him for 1-2 near MLB ready prospects, miss the playoffs and pay a portion of the cash they were going to pay already or they can keep him, pay all the cash, miss the playoffs anyway and get jack shit when he walks. Seems to me a couple of "can't miss" prospects are better than nothing.

I dunno maybe its just me but I don't see them being able to fetch a kings ransom for Beltran. (That said some dumb fuck GM will drop his pants and fuck up the market for everyone.)

What do you guys think?

The Mets will be looking to trade him to a team that will eat most of his contract first, and prospects second. The ownership of that team is hanging by a thread. So any team willing to take most of his contract and offer some used jockstraps will get him before a team with prospects and not willing to eat much of his contract. So it's not really the Mets can keep him or trade him for prospects, it's more the Mets would prefer the other team eat his contract while getting little in return. The Mets ownership have pretty much sold their soul to stay afloat (the deal they made for cash puts that guy in line to take over if the Mets go under), so money will be their main motivating factor, not prospects. As we all know, the Reds are not a team with cash to throw around. Could it happen? Sure, but the Reds would be one of the last offers the Mets would consider.

I thought I read/heard that almost no one could choke down that salary? Which I guess is what made me go down the prospects logic trail.

Being a Reds fan all these years has made the trades and such the only fun part for me anymore. It will be interesting to see how they play it.

I'd like to have him if the price is right but the sad part is we could have a platoon give us almost the same production if we had a manager smart enough to figure it out.

I'd have to think the first thing theMets would want is salary relief because of the whole Wilpon/Madoff thing. That would seem to make the Reds a poor match. On the other hand though, the types of teams that could afford to take on that kind of salary are the teams that probably already have big expensive bats in the OF anyway. Maybe there is a middle ground to be reached, but since I doubt the Reds are kicking butt at the turnstiles I also doubt that a trade that takes on a significant chunk of salary is in the offing.

Reds promote IF Zack Cozart (#2) and RHP Carlos Fisher, option IF Paul Janish and RHP Edinson Volquez. Cozart make ML debut when he plays.

Should Dontrelle Willis be packing his gear as well? I'd be disappointed if the corresponding move were to put LeCure in the empty rotation slot, but I guess I should be used to it by now.

He is making just over 18 million, and it's over half way through the season. Someone could take on 9 million (or most of it), but not the Reds. The Mets are still afloat thanks to that 200 million or whatever is was, but they need to save as much cash as they can before next year or sell the team. 9 million right now for the Mets is huge, so they would take next to nothing if they can save cash. That same 200 million sale also put David Einhorn in the position of a circling shark. If Wilpon can't save his ass by dumping as much salary as possible between now and next year, the team essentially goes to Einhorn.

Note, this is all speculation. Supposedly they will still try to sign Reyes so the fans don't completely revolt, but if Wilpon wants to stay owner of the Mets he will take any offer that saves him money.
