Reds tidbits (2010 season)

Don't. Fucking. Jinx it.
I'm doing my part. I haven't gone to any games this year.

After my son broke the arms off his Edinson Volquez bobblehead last year, leading to Volquez needing Tommy John surgery the very next week, I'm taking extra precautions today to make sure we're not within 125 miles of any Joey Votto figurines this evening, whether they're delivered on time or not.

Paul Daugherty warns of the impending June-swoon, or maybe a West Coast road trip ... either way, the kick in the nuts is coming.

Cincinnati.Com | Cincinnati Enquirer | Paul Daugherty ? The Morning Line, 5/28

While I agree with Daugherty that the Reds have gotten fat on bad teams, I think part of the point for celebration is that they're actually good enough to get fat on the bad teams now. If the Reds can play .700 ball versus the bad teams and .500 versus the good ones, then they'll be in the post season. That's kind of how it works. Winning the last St. Louis series wasn't that important to this club, they've done it before. Sweeping the Milwaukee series after the St Louis series was what this club has never been able to do before, and they're capable of doing now.

Part of the excitement is that the Reds are actually good enough to beat up on bad teams. Another part of the excitement is that their division (and therefore a large part of their schedule) is comprised of those bad teams.

From BBTN ...

That can't be from BBTN. It's not about the Yankees or Red Sox.

Was this a tee-ball game? You know it's a good night when you're at a cookout, check the cell phone for the play-by-play, and are greeted by this:

What a day for baseball ...

You've got a perfect game, A-Rod braining an Indians pitcher with a line drive, Kendry Morales breaking his leg celebrating a walk-off slam, and Dontrelle Willis DFA'd by the Tigers. The Reds go beer league softball on the Astros pitching staff for the second day in a row, have the second best record in baseball, the best offense of any team in baseball not in the AL East with a payroll of $200M, and it's a complete non-story.

I'm so scared right now. I want to get really excited but as soon as I do, that kick in the nuts you all have been talking about, is going to come.

I'll just keep it toned down and my fingers crossed til they're 10 games in first.

There are some tough stretches coming up. A West coast trip (although Seattle is not very good) and the 15 before the All Star break will be tough. So I fully expect them to come back to earth a little before the break. Yet if they can get through that in decent shape then I will really start to believe they are a playoff team. In the mean time I still think they are what I thought they would be, an above .500 team but not a playoff team. They are just in one of their hot streaks, yet it certainly is fun to watch.

I'm impressed with Leake today. He clearly doesn't have his best stuff today, but he's finding ways to keep his team in the game. It's a very "veteran" performance. His teammates need to pick him up with the bats.

Dusty with more genius moves. Gomes singles to lead off the inning and would be the winning run. You have one of the fastest players on the bench. Do you put him in? No, you need that batter to pinch hit. So Gomes is thrown out at third on a force where Stubbs would have been safe.

He baffles me so much. That is not even Sabermetrics vs. old school baseball. That is just baseball 101.

I hadn't seen this until now... The Reds have finally come up with a promotion that is better than $1 hot dogs!

Basically, every Reds win on this homestand means an additional $4 off Field Box seats for the upcoming series vs. the Royals. The three wins vs. the Pirates means those seats are $12 off so far, with this weekend's games to go. I'll be back in town for that, so I might have to hit it up - especially if the Reds can take 2/3 vs. HOU.

Reds Win, You Win | reds.com: Tickets

Thanks for the link. Just ordered 4 tickets for the Sunday game right on the left field line for less than $70. Can't beat that.
