Reds tidbits (2010 season)

In case you missed it, this was an article posted yesterday by Hal:

DaytonDailyNews: Dayton, Ohio, news and information

Details Chapman's speed, but most significantly confirms that Edmonds has taken not only Bruce under his wing, but also Gomes and Valaika. Not coincidentally, the arrival of Edmonds triggered Bruce and Gomes breaking out of their month+ long slumps.

Apparently Edmonds and Gomes haven't had any conversations about defense. :p

I have noticed though that Gomes is at least lining out a lot more often than flying out to infielders.

On Volquez's start in Dayton last night, working on a mechanical change recommended by Bryan Price:

Volquez strong despite Dragons' loss to Hot Rods

Volquez strong despite Dragons' loss to Hot Rods

DAYTON ? Add Orlando Cabrera to the major leaguers impressed with Fifth Third Field.

"I was like, 'Wow, this is A ball?'" the Cincinnati Reds shortstop said shortly after arriving Wednesday, Sept. 1, for what he hoped would be a one-game injury rehab stint.

"And they tell me 9,000 people are here every night?"

With the 35-year-old Cabrera leading off, Reds right-hander Edinson Volquez on the mound and 17-year-old Venezuelan second baseman Ronald Torreyes making his Dayton debut, the opener of the final homestand offered the Dragons' latest sellout crowd a reprieve from the usual.

If that wasn't enough in what became a 5-3 loss to Bowling Green, playing right field for the Hot Rods was Burt Reynolds.

But not even a Hollywood legend could steal the show from Volquez, who sawed through the Hot Rods as you would expect a big-league pitcher might, allowing an unearned run and five singles in seven innings.

Volquez struck out nine and walked one. He threw 97 pitches, 63 for strikes, and the only run against him crossed on a passed ball in the seventh.

Cont'd ...

Best record in the NL.

Yup. Braves lose. Not only is the Reds' .586 tops in the NL, it's 3rd in all of MLB behind the Yankees and Rays. The 669 runs scored is 3rd in all of MLB behind the Yankees and Red Sox.

With the NL winning the All Star Game, if the season ended today the Reds would have home field advantage clear through the World Series. Yet, being the jaded Reds fan I am and having been through the previous decade, I'm still wondering how they'll blow this.

The 2007 Mets, afterall, blew a 7 game lead in 17 days.

Speaking strictly of the regular season pennant chase not the playoffs, I'd be willing to wager some serious cash the Reds end up NL Central champs. I'm as jaded as anyone but math is math.

A) The Reds aren't likely going to participate in the damn near O-for-September streak it would take on their part and
B) The Cards aren't capable of the damn near undefeated September it would take on their part.

The non-big 5 of the St Louis team have all remembered who they really are (marginal MLB players at best) and by all accounts the clubhouse is a mess with LaGenius's act wearing thin. The Reds on the other hand have the farm system/depth advantage coming in to play for the stretch run and ,to Dusty's credit, seem to have phenomenal chemistry and resilience.

I just keep coming back to how many times the Reds have had a chance to fold after a brutal series loss and how every single time they have come right back like nothing even happened. All Reds bashing aside, that is a sign of mas huevos. So to me, better overall talent from 1-25 + better team chemistry/mental toughness + 8 game lead with 30ish to play = win

If the Reds just win 1 of 3 this weekend the Cards are screwed, any better than that and start getting your playoff tickets.

Agree. 1 of 3 has to be the goal. Just don't get swept. After St Louis, the four game series in Colorado does give me pause. The Rockies are on one of their annual ridiculous last minute runs.

I want to see how the Reds handle the next seven games in seven days before I declare them NL Central champs. The big plus is the StL/Marlins rescheduled game on the 20th, which wipes out the Cardinals only off day. Starting tonight, they play 31 games in 31 days.

If the Reds win just 1 of 3 vs St Louis they go into the Rockies series with a 7 game lead. If they win just 1 of 4 in Colorado the best the Cards could do is cut it to 4 with something like 24 games to go. So if the Reds completely tank and go 2-5 in the next 7 and the Cards all of a sudden go 5-2 (.714) they would still be looking at a 4 game deficit.

Nothing is impossible but it is a good illustration of how deep a hole the whiny bald bitches are in.

I just ran to the Shell station around the corner from my office for a fountain soda and bag of chips to get me through the last hour of work, and in the 90 seconds I was inside I saw two different people walk in wearing shirts sporting the Reds' wishbone C.

I haven't seen an article of Reds clothing in this town in 11 years outside of my own closet.

Need to start hot tonight and chase Garcia. We get into the Cards bullpen, we can get this first game. The next two against pitchers that historically own us are definitely going to be tough.

Wish Bruce were playing tonight though. I dont like the time off for a player during a streak.

Are you feeling ok? Optimism from Jax... The sky is falling!
