Reds tidbits (2010 season)

Holy shit! Who kidnapped Cordero and replaced him with someone competent? Reds win!

On this dreaded west coast road trip, the Reds have won each of the first two series and by getting their fifth win, have guaranteed a winning trip overall.

I've been reading a lot of RZ over the last several weeks, and I'm amazed at the way that people there continue to sell Bronson Arroyo short. IMO he belongs in any 3-man playoff rotation, and picking up his option for next season should be a mortal lock.

You know EXACTLY what you're gonna get with Arroyo. He never misses a start. He eats innings. He'll come up with a colossal stinker every couple months, and then quietly pitch slightly-above average baseball every other time he gets the ball. He's been the definition of a stopper this year. Any time the Reds have a must-win game or face a big mismatch, he's the guy I want on the mound. It seems like he's won those games more often than not this year - or at least kept the Reds in a position to do it. With the Reds having a rotation full of youngsters who are somewhat volatile and need to be babied as far as pitch counts and innings go, it's nice to have a guy like him every fifth day who you don't really have to worry about and can take some stress off the bullpen.

In addition to picking up his option, I think the Reds should explore an extension in the 2-3 year range. He's getting up there in age, but he's never had injury problems and his style of play lends itself to being productive into the later years of his career. I don't care if there are younger guys that have higher ceilings. Even if you consider him your No. 5, he fills a role that none of the young guys can for the forseeable future.

He comes close to being worth his salary. Still slightly overpaid and I am not sure he would command $11 million in the free agent market next year (well, unless the Yankees pull an AJ Burnett). Of course it would be a longer deal with less money per year, so $11 million might be in the ballpark for a 1 year deal. If the Reds can swing a deal at $9 million per for 3 years I would be cool with it.

edit: there is a $2 million dollar buyout on his deal, so it would really only cost an extra $9 million next year. That is a good deal, so at the minimum the Reds will pick up his option.
edit2: Oops, there is an innings pitched escalator on his deal that could make it $13 million. I don't know the number, but I am guessing he will hit is. So back to $11 million.
