Well, there's two ways to look at this: Now 2 games up on the Cards, the Reds are right back where they were at the start of the series vs. St. Louis. Of course, if the Reds would've taken 2 out of 3 in that one, they'd be up 6 games now instead.

There's a lost of west coast baseball left, but this was a good start.

Sweep Arizona and go 2-4 against the rest and it's a winning road trip. He'll, if they win one fucking game in LA I'd consider it a roaring success. Gotta hand it to Dusty, Rolen, or whoever ... Reds team the last five years wouldve folded like a wet paper sack after Atlanta, Philly, or the StL series. This team just keeps bouncing back.

Oh yeah, I know Owings time was through after the demotion. There's nothing more useless than a pitcher you can't even trust to pitch once every 16 days when you're being blown out, but it still stings that this means the Reds gave away Adam Dunn for nothing.

Meh.

People forget at the time Dunn had little value and was a free agent the next year. He was making $13 million a year, and only was nothing more than a rental (a short one at that). The deal was made after the trade deadline too, which hurt some value.

Dunn was not coming back to the Reds, anyway. Most GM's in baseball would not touch Dunn with a 10 foot pole at the time. From 2006 through 2008 he had an average WAR of 1.9. That is below starter level. Plus he did not seem to want to stay in Cincy any longer.

Certainly I would take him over Gomes, but at $10,000,000 per year the Nationals overpaid for him. It paid off this year, but Dunn has been near the top if not at the top of baseball's overpaid list for the 4 years previous to this one.

If anything it sucks they didn't pull of anything prior to the trade deadline, but even then Dunn had little value. Well, either that or just hang onto him and get a draft pick. He probably would not have accepted arbitration, and it could have led to 2 draft picks.

Yet hey, the Reds still have 25 year old Dallas Buck with an ERA over 6 in the AA.

Quick question from a casual follower of the redlegs...wtf happened to Jay Bruce? I thought he was supposed to be the second coming a couple of years ago...

I think he was more hyped than he should have been, but his defense is very good. I also think his hitting will improve. I see him as a plus defender with a .850 OPS. In other words, a plus starter and occasional all star. Honestly, I see a lot of Paul O'Neil in him. The kid is only 23. In comparison, Votto was not even in the majors at the same age (Votto just hit the majors when he was almost 24....Bruce will not be 24 until April of next year).

On a side note, I was looking through some numbers across the Reds and the league. One thing that really stood out....Phillips right now has a total zone number vs. average of zero. Yeah, bullcrap. While I love to post WAR, defensive zone rating is part of it. It does seem to do a decent job of picking out the terrible fielders, but beyond that the defensive stats are really bad. Phillips is one of, if not the best, defensive 2nd baseman in baseball.

Yes, he is frustrating at the plate at times. Yet he is as solid as it gets at 2nd base. His WAR sits at 1.8. That means he will probably end up at 2.4. That is starter level, and ok. Yet he should be borderline All Star (3 to 4).
