Reds tidbits (2010 season)

...Except the Reds just lost a near-replacement level SS. The Cards lost their starting 3B and their only reliever who can miss bats. I'll gladly take the Reds' problems over the Cards' problems right now.
Rolen and Hernandez are always a double away from pulling up lame. 180 feet is a long way to run when you're old. They're already being held together with duct tape and staples, and neither one of them has played more than four games a week since May.

Both very true - but I'll take Hanigan & Cairo (feels strange to say, I know) over Felipe Lopez and whoever LaRussa's gonna try to use out of the pen in Motte's absence.

Let's face it, any injury in the Cards bullpen is a good thing for the Reds. Not only does it mean they can't afford to get rid of MacDougal & Hawksworth, but that they might actually have to use them MORE.

Next week, I hope to see the Reds take pitches against the Cards, jump on them when they can but work high pitch counts. The Reds should win any game in which a Cards starter goes less than 7 innings.

We'll see. Cards have their rotation set. The Reds will get Carpenter, Garcia, and Wainright.
Unless they juggle the rotation in Chicago, they'll counter with Leake, Cueto and Arroyo.

For those that missed it, Springer was lifted for Bray with the trainer coming out to the bump to escort him off. After the game, Springer was quoted as saying, "My hip flexor locked up. I didn't even know I had a muscle there."

This is the same guy that has said, "I like to play long toss to rearrange the bone chips."

Crap. I didn't realize the Cardinals starters for the St. Louis @ Cincy series are Carpenter, Garcia, and Wainwright. SonofaB!

edit: well at least they face Johnson and Nolasco (who has pitched better recently) in Florida.

From Buster Olneys twitter

Aroldis Chapman's last 10 outings: 0 runs, 6 hits, 4 walks and 16 punchouts in 11.1 innings. I spoke with Class AAA coach Ted Power and he says a mechanical adjustment has helped Chapman. It's evident Chapman might be closer to the big leagues. Spoke with Reds GM Walt Jocketty tonight, and he said he hasn't discussed possible promotion for the lefty with Dusty Baker in awhile, but he thinks they could have a conversation later in the week -- and they envision Chapman helping them in the late innings.

I really hope he's called up for the St Louis series.

Aroldis Chapman about to frustrate NL hitters
By Buster Olney

Aroldis Chapman was clocked at 103 mph in the ninth inning the other night -- twice -- as he closed out Columbus on behalf of the Reds' Triple-A affiliate. And what should concern National League hitters is that Chapman is throwing that hard while throwing strikes.

His streak of scoreless outings out of the bullpen for the Louisville Bats has reached 10, and in that time he has allowed just six hits and four walks over 11 1/3 innings, with 16 strikeouts. Cincinnati general manager Walt Jocketty said Wednesday evening that he probably will have a discussion with Reds manager Dusty Baker this week about whether and when to promote Chapman -- but clearly, he has moved onto the Reds' radar. "I see him at some point, if we decide to pull him up, helping us late in ballgames," Jocketty said.

...

Power has never worked with anyone who throws as hard as Chapman -- few, if any, have -- and he has been impressed with the left-hander's athleticism and his ability to make plays on the mound. "He just turned 22," Power said. "I would say this guy could be a superstar [eventually]."

Eventually, Chapman will transition back into a starter's role -- perhaps in the Arizona Fall League, as Jocketty mentioned, or next spring. But in the not-so-distant future, he probably will create problems for NL hitters. "He's throwing strikes with all of his pitches," said Jocketty, who, like Power, has never seen anyone with an arm like Chapman's.

"Never," the GM said. "Not with the consistency of velocity he has or the slider he has. He has the makings of being a really good pitcher. He was 96 to 102 mph the other night, and he did hit 103 mph a couple of times. The other thing about that is he is so free and easy. He's throwing hard, but he just looks free and easy."

I'd love to see that just from the standpoint of the lineup gymnastics LaRussa would attempt every time The Dusty threatened to put him in.
I am happy McCutcheon was able to brush off the fastball Leake clocked him with and come right back the next day and play. I'm glad he wasn't gun-shy and got that homer in his first AB (it's all good since the Reds won). I would never, ever wish a serious injury on any player (except for maybe Ben Roethlisburger -- which has nothing to do with his play, and everything to do with the fact he's a sub-human POS scumbag alcoholic-womanizing-rapist).

OK? So all that said, I wouldn't mind if the Reds decided to unveil their 103mph throwing lefty with control problems against the Cardinals lineup. Bean 'em all! Fuck 'em. Bean Yadier Molina twice ... I hate that fucker.

Skip F Schumaker needs a nice 4 seam tattoo in the middle of his back. Then go find David Eckstein at whatever gas station he pumps at now and drill his ass for old time sake.

Five players striving to join some exclusive company in 2010 - ESPN

Joey Votto's "Double" Crown"

Could Votto win a Triple Crown? It still isn't out of the question. He leads the league in batting. He was leading in homers until Adam Dunn passed him Wednesday. And in the RBI column, Votto trails a guy who just landed on the disabled list (Ryan Howard) by only eight.

And if the traditional Triple Crown doesn't work out for him, Votto is still on pace to win the "Modern Triple Crown" -- championed by my friend Joe Posnanski over at SI.com. He leads the league in batting, on-base percentage and slugging percentage. And if he can hang on, he'd become just the ninth man in the last half-century to win the all-decimal-point version of the Triple Crown.

But even if the Reds' big bopper doesn't win either trifecta, the "Double Crown" Votto is chasing would still land him in some cool company.

It isn't all that rare for a player to win two legs of the Triple Crown. But it's exceptionally rare for a guy to win the two legs Votto has the best shot at -- homers and batting average -- in the same season.

Barry Bonds never did it. Willie Mays never did it. Stan Musial never did it. Not in the same year, anyway. In fact, only three men ever did: Ted Williams in 1941, Johnny Mize in 1939 and Babe Ruth in 1924. Good group. Historic group. And Votto is in excellent position to join them. We'll keep you posted.
