Reds tidbits (2010 season)

Eh he was questionable due to the flu right? If that's the case I'd rather get him out early and let him recover. Would be nice to touch Oswalt up for a couple more runs to make it an easy decision though.
According to Thom and Chris, Cueto has never had his tonsils removed. His recent stint with illness was a flareup.

Matthews Jr is gone. He had the option to walk if he wasn't called up by today, and he decided to exercise that option, no doubt because so many other clubs were blowing up his agent's phone seeking his services.

Gary Matthews Jr., who was playing for Triple-A Louisville, opted out of his deal after the Reds didn't bring him up to the majors on Saturday. Baker said he spoke to Matthews on Saturday morning and tried to persuade him to stay with the team for a while, but Matthews said he simply didn't want to be in Triple-A any longer.

He actually lives near me. I talked to his wife this morning about his future plans.

I can't figure Phillips out.

Whats not to figure out?

Offensively he's an undisciplined hack who's OBP is 100% batting average driven. He has to hit his way on every time because he's genetically incapable of taking the 4 pitches required for a walk. He goes up there hacking in situations when anyone who's played past little league knows you shouldn't be first pitch swinging more than any player I can recall watching. Its absolutely infuriating.

As a base runner he has 11 SB's and been caught 8 times for a whopping 58% success rate. Anything short of 70% and you are detrimental to run production.

Defensively he's a stud, no doubt about it but his all around boneheadedness is on display in all facets of the game as we saw the other night with missing the hit and run sign and not letting Bruce take the flyball the runner tagged up on.

To sum up Phillips, once that one unique skill he has (make contact enough to keep his OBP passable) starts to wane he'll be an overpaid, boneheaded outmachine with a glove and nothing else. I hope he's not a Red when it happens.
