Reds Tidbits (2009 season)

Early on in his tenure Shapiro set out to rebuild the Tribe around pitching and dfense. Apparently he wasn't married to his plan.

Well at least he doesn't think that in order to be a pitching and defense team you must suck on offense.

Our management has decided to try and overwhelm the NL with pinch runners.

ok..i will take 2 out of three from the crappy indians...2.5 games out of first place. every time the reds get this close they implode...i hope they make moves to stay in this race...get volquez back and i think the pitching can be strong enough..third base and short are still issues..although i like harriston

If EE comes back and plays 3B and swings a decent bat more so than we have had since he went down...

We could go:

Dickerson
Hairson
Votto
Phillips
Gomes/Nix
EE
Bruce
Hernandez/Hanigan

Honestly there aren't a ton of holes from the offensive side in that lineup...The problem will be when Dusty continues to play WT in the leadoff spot...

We have some speed, power, and smart hitters throughout the lineup...I still see our weak spots being SS, LF, and 3B but we can be servicable at all of them spots for the time being. So if we could make a push for someone in that is legit in one of those 3 positions you go for it, but I don't break the bank, because we have some talent coming up through the minor leagues like Frazier, Alonso, Stubbs, Cozart that could fill some fo those roles, and I hate to give up pitcing like Bailey that some teams will want. I would give up Arroyo, Roenicke, and say a Heisey for a Holiday or someone like that. Still think SS is the most important position that we are looking for. We have some decent bats in LF/3B right now.

Thoughts?

Moves I would like to see made

1.MAKE HANIGAN the #1 catcher and bat him 2nd. He's htting 100 f'en points higher than Hernandez and plays a gold glove caliber defense.

2. Make Dickerson the everyday CF. That should be a no brainer.

3. Trade Arroyo. He is due over 10 mill for next year.

4. I might also really consider trading Harang if you can get some great young players in return. He is due 14 mill for next year. If they were to get rid of Arroyo and Harangs contracts, decline Ramon's and Gonzalez's options for 2010, that would free up around 40 million for next season.

EE has been the wild card for some time now. IF he comes back and hits like he's capable it makes the team much better.

I also don't see the Dusty starting Dickerson over Quick Willie so everything thing else is pretty much fucked after that.

Those are the two biggest things for me. Others are Bruce's continued black hole of suck out in RF and the lack of a real MLB caliber SS but they are secondary to the first 2.

As with every year the past decade or so it seems the wildcard leaves people thinking we can compete so the sell/buy debate rages. I say sell, sell, a million times sell. Take a chance to accumulate that extra wave of talent and give us a chance at sustainible long term success. Don't ship out young talent so we can MAYBE say we played in the first round of the playoffs before we got bounced.

The farm is full of talent, the MLB team has a core of young talent, add to it and wait another year or two for a chance at a decade of good teams, don't piss it away for another fucking Tavaras type of move.

Losing out on DeRosa has Reds looking elsewhere

Cubs fans aren't done lamenting the fact that onetime North Side favorite Mark DeRosa was traded from Cleveland to rival St. Louis on Saturday night.

Here's my advice to them: Drop it. Another team in the National League Central had an even greater need for DeRosa ? and I'm not talking about the Cardinals.
The most disappointed team after the deal was probably in the visiting clubhouse during this weekend's Buckeye Series at Progressive Field.
Yes, the Cincinnati Reds wanted Mark DeRosa in the worst way. And on Sunday, two industry sources said the Reds are still very much engaged in their search for right-handed hitting.
The Reds have left-handed power, with young sluggers Joey Votto and Jay Bruce. DeRosa, a right-handed run producer, would have been an ideal complement. DeRosa plays two positions, left field and third base, where Cincinnati has had below-major-league-average production, as judged by OPS.

Wonder what happened to their engagement in that search during the off season? Some big RH mashing bastard named Burrell was a FA at one point iirc.

This search for RH hitting is just further proof of what a completely incompetent job was done this off season. They made CF worse and paid more money to do it. They also completely ignored a glaring weakness at SS. LF is an after thought compared to the first 2.

Now the dumb fucks will go over pay for some middle of the road fuckstick like DeRosa when they have a lot of young talent for 3B close to MLB ready. Walt has a history with that type of guy in St Louis. Watch for a david Eckstein or Rich Aurillia to show up at our door any day.

BTW

Mark DeRosa career OPS: .772
EE career OPS: .788

Unless EE's injury means he isn't coming back this year why in the fuck would you give up anything at all to pay more for an older player who doesn't bring anything extra to the table than the ability to play LF?

This is exactly the kind of stupid ass move I was describing in my post above.

:slappy:

Only the Reds would think that trading for a slug like Wigginton would improve their chances at finishing 4th in the NL Central.

If Ty Wigginton is the solution, the question is fucked.
