Reds Tidbits (2009 season)

LOL at the Wikipedia entry. Wonder where that came from? I think if the Reds ever challenged the '88 Orioles 21-game streak or the '61 Phillies 23-game streak, it'd be national news worthy.

FWIW, the current 6-game skid after being swept on the road trip is the worst losing streak since dropping seven in a row at the end of the '07 season.

Just to show you how bad I've tuned them out, I don't know if thats true or not but I wouldn't put it past them. 24 games? Thats a ridiculous number.

How much do you guys want to bet Wait Jocketty either does nothing at all or makes one piss ant middle reliever for a bag of balls type of limp dick trade?

On second thought check that, if I say that they'll go empty the farm for Rolen, Scuturo and Vernon Wells from Toronto while Halladay goes to Philly.

I know I pussied out and came back after I said I was done if they hired The Dusty but if they make some big splash/we're one veteran player away from winning type of bullshit trade I may not be responsible for my own actions.

My guess is the FO is standing pat, thinking to themselves they'd be players if they hadn't gone 1 mo without Votto, 2-1/2 mo without EE, Taveras and A-Gon up-and-down, Bruce and Ramon Hernandez now out, Volquez missing over two months, etc ...

Presuming Bruce doesn't make it back this year, the Reds will play the 2009 season having only started their projected Opening Day lineup for 10 games. Shit, they couldn't even start their Opening Day lineup on Opening Day!

Yankees And Reds Talking Arroyo Trade

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 27, 2009 at 5:00pm CST]
The Yankees and Reds are seriously discussing a Bronson Arroyo trade, according to Jeff Fletcher of AOL FanHouse. One of Fletcher's sources says the possible deal "will get done," though the two clubs haven't determined how much of the $4MM remaining on Arroyo's contract the Reds will pay. Arroyo will make $11MM next season and the same amount in 2011 if his team doesn't buy him out for $2MM.
Earlier this afternoon Fletcher reported that the Reds could be on the brink of making a move.

I wanted to trade him to the yankees mid season 2006 when he was at absolute peak value. Everyone thought I was nuts because we supposedly had a chance at contending. Now he's 10x more expensive and will be nothing but a salary dump. At least we have our World Series win in 2006 to look back on. :roll2:

Oh well, at this point clearing dead wood and addition by subtraction is better than nothing (I hope).

Castellini isn't ready to sell players
Posted by JohnFay at 7/27/2009 5:17 PM EDT on Cincinnati.com
The perception around baseball is that the Reds are ready to sell. But the man who will ultimately make that call, CEO Bob Castellini, says he’s not to that point.

“I believe we’re not at that point,” he said. “If we can get our pitching to show up and get our hitting to show up at the same time, we’re still possibly contenders.

“How long that lasts, you’ll probably know before I do.”

Time is definitely getting short. The Reds are nine games under .500 at 44-53, 7? games out of first with 65 games to play.

They placed two more players – Chris Dickerson and Micah Owings -- on the disabled list Monday. They have nine players on the DL currently.

“I don’t think we’ve dealt with injuries any worse than the Mets and they have twice the payroll,” Castellini said.

Castellini tried to stress the positive.

“The guys have to keep their chins up,” he said. “It’s been tough.”

Dusty Baker and Walt Jocketty have said all along that the Reds are trying to add players to help win this year.

They’ve talked to the Toronto Blue Jays about Scott Rolen. Talks began three weeks ago. The Reds were hovering around .500 at the time.
They’ve since slid hard. They are 3-12 since July 7.

The only way dealing for Rolen makes sense is if the club feels it needs a veteran presence in the clubhouse for this year and next. Jocketty was the GM in St. Louis when he traded for Rolen.

Rolen would be a major upgrade over Edwin Encarnacion defensively. But the deal to work financially, Encarnacion would have to be part of it.

Toronto is also trying to trade Roy Halladay. Reports out of Toronto say the Jays would like to move Halladay before making other moves.

Also, the Yankees do have interest in Bronson Arroyo. But the money and his inconsistency make it unlikely to happen.

I saw that and all I can say is he has to just be stroking the fans thinking that if he says "we're fucked the fire sale starts in 10 minutes" the fans might be dissapointed.

That or he's a just complete fucking idiot.

We'd be better if we could get our pitchers to pitch better and our hitters to hit better. No shit Bob? Really? Fuck me running, all this time and its something that easy. Maybe that fucking mental defective chewing a toothpick down in the dugout could do something about that?

Dickhead.

Somebody's gotta say it. It's not as if attendance & revenue are great right now, but if Cast comes out and says they're gonna blow it up, even fewer rubes would show up and eat dollar hot dogs.

I agree.

Then again, maybe someone in the FO could stop and ask themselves "If the last 30 years hasn't run them off, can anything we do in the midst of yet another lost season really bring things to a breaking point?"

I mean if you made it through 1982, Jimmy Haynes/Anderson and Eric Milton are you seriously sitting there thinking "if they trade Bronson I'm fucking done!!" ?

There are people in this town who think the Reds are thisclose to contending. Seriously. Let them keep buying tickets if Castellini can dupe them.

I'm the opposite right now. The Reds are now saying to ignore the internet rumors. If I am to ignore the rumors, then I'll just ignore the entire team. I'm more likely to spend my money on the Reds the rest of this season if they blow the damn thing up. If they stand pat or add somebody expensive, then I'm done for the year.

Apears that in some folks minds we're just good hitting and good pitching away from being right in the mix.

well uhh...yeah, they're probably right

Now if they think that the CURRENT group of players can do that or not is up for debate. From the tone of the articles ( :smash: ) they do.

I just happened to look at the box score of the Reds game and couldn't help myself. I noticed fast Willy was sporting the 0-4 and decided to see where his OBP and SLG were for the year.

He has an OBP of .289 and a SLG of .301 :yow1: I swear to God I had to look at it three time. My brain couldn't process seeing those type of numbers under either category. You just don't see it.

I can't even begin to express how bad that is. When your slugging percentage would be a very bad OBP you have reached some special level of suck. That would be like a QB having about a 40% completion percentage, a negative TD/INT ratio and the coaches just keep running him out there.

A .289 OBP shouldn't even be playing MLB, and yet our braintrust signs this worthless piece of shit to a 2 year deal, hands him the starting CF/leadoff duties and appears to have made that irrevocable in his contract.

All joking aside, the profundity of just how little our baseball people "get it" is amazing. Simply fucking amazing. Dusty Baker has shaken my faith in Darwanisim. Follow with me;

1. Barring some major blunt force trauma to the head he's been this stupid since birth.

2. Anyone that fucking stupid from birth should have done something so shit all stupid as to have gotten themselves killed well before their 15th birthday. Walked off a building, fork in a toaster, head in a wheat combine, something. Yet The Dusty is well into his 50's or 60's.

3. If something that stupid can live that long natural selection is bullshit.
