Reds Tidbits (2008 season)

Dang.

You gave it to us with the wild pitch and a couple boots defensively by Encarcion. We gave it back by trotting out Gagne for a 4th straight day. He couldn't locate anything.

Gag-me is a Bum, his best years was in LA and somewhat in Boston. It's about time the Reds got to him.

-Great to get that win, that loss would have been a crusher to a team thats used to crushers.

-This offense just should not suck this bad....yet it does. You should be able to afford an all-glove-no-hit player in CF, SS and at C. We only have them in CF and C. Traditionaly your corner guys are the mashers, well 3 of our 4 corner guys have been MIA so far this year. EE is coming around, I don't have high expectations for Votto as a rookie, Dunn is being pitched around and JR is solid but not spectacular so far.

If those 4 get it going we have plus bats at SS and 2B. You add in 82 games at GAB and we should have a plus offense.

-The bullpen beyond Cordero still scares the hell out of me.

-Still some moves to be made to make this team good. Hatte/Freel/Hopper and some prospects are your basic trading chips. RH power off the bench, bullpen and C are your most glaring needs.

Probable pitching matchups for the last 4 games of the home stand:

4/21 and 4/22 Reds vs Dodgers

Belisle vs Penny
Brad Penny...we all know his story. Good luck to us but he has been touched up a bit early this year especially away from Chavez Ravine.

Volquez vs Kuo
Kuo throws the ball to the plate with his left hand. Nuff said.

4/23 and 4/24 Reds vs Astros

Arroyo vs Sampson
Sampson is yet another midling type player who has done very well vs Cincy. He was brutalized in his last outing, look for him to completely shut us down.

Cueto vs Cassel
Cassel is being called up from AAA to make an emergency start. If we can't win this one against the freakin Astros then god help us.

3 out of 4 is what we need to salvage a winning home stand. I think its asking too much. I expect 2-2 or worse.

I am really hoping that the win today will jump start things...I think 3-1 is possible...If the pitching stays good and the bats come around, but I am like you thinking that it will be 2-2 or worse...

Hey hello E5's bat! As soon as he gets rid of that need to make too many plays at once in the field he just might have something going. If they bring Jay Bruce up within the next two to three weeks and play him in center, there's no reason this team shouldnt score 5 runs a game at least. Patterson to spot start and pinch hit/run is where he should go. We dont have the righty off the bench and no one waiting in the wings to get the call up unfortunately. Just have to deal with it somehow and get the Donkey going and Phillips back on track. I'll take the kind of pitching we've been getting lately, eventually that should be enough to win. Just not right now. Arroyo is a streaky guy that if he can get past the first two innings unscathed will usually give us 5-7 strong innings of 2 or less runs. If anyone in the bullpen was alive enough to come in and get it done, that would be just fine. Again, I'm waiting on Bray to get brought up and see what Fogg can do out of the pen. I still actually believe thought that Belisle would be a monster long reliever because his stamina ends at 3-4 innings and he gets rocked after that usually.

Here are the moves that I would think long and hard about right now...

Hairston for Castro...He is absolutely mashing the ball in AAA right now...He could provide a little better pop from the right side of the plate than our options we have now...

Bray for Weathers to DL...Bray has shown that he is ready IMO...He has good stuff and has been dominating AAA hitters...

I also think heavily about bringing up Bruce...He needs to work on some patience at the plate, but when he going against guys that he can drill there is no reason for him not to swing...The only thing that sucks in terms of bringing up Bruce and putting him in CF is you lose the defense out there, and might have one of the slowest outfields in the history of the game...

But Bruce, Votto, Griffey, Dunn, Phillips, Keppinger, EE give you some pop in the lineup...The only problem is other than Phillips you don't have guys that are going to make things happen on the basebaths...You have no one other than Kepp that handles the bat well, and you have no bunters...This franchise is missing that leadoff batter, high OBP and hit for average type guy...

If we bring Bruce up...I would go with...

Kepp
Votto
Griffey
Dunn
EE
Bruce
Phillips
Bako

There is no splitting up the lefties when you have 5 in the lineup...
Really there are a couple combos to go with, but you have more slugging in the lineup than we do now...

I completely agree.

I do think that maybe I'd bat Keppinger and Phillips closer together though.

Keppinger
Phillips
Griffey
Dunn
Encarnacion
Votto
Bruce
Bako
Pitcher.

Like you said the Righties and Lefties are in pockets but what can you do when there are so many?

That looks like a mashing lineup though!

I agree, alternating L-R-L-R is not a winning strategy with this team. An opposing team is not going to hesitate to bring in a LOOGY when the Reds' most threatening hitters are left-handed for the most part. Even if a team brings on a LHP and that pitcher allows the Reds' interspersed right-handed hitters to reach base, all it's seeming to get the Reds is a couple men stranded on base instead of a 1-2-3 inning. I think the Reds would be better off to put their best hitters together regardless of what side they bat from, and make hay earlier in the game before a LOOGY out of the bullpen becomes a factor.

I've been starting to wonder, what is it about lefty-on-lefty matchups that seemingly makes it so difficult for hitters (not just the Reds in particular)? I mean, I understand about the ability to see the ball and arm angles and all that stuff, but the effect of righty-on-righty matchups doesn't seem to be nearly as pronounced. Can somebody maybe explain this to me?

I'm guessing the Lefty/Lefty thing is much more rare to see coming up from little league on that they just dont see it as often and it takes more to get used to it. People are predominantly right handed so the occurrance is more natural and the time with exposure is much more defined. They actually made a point to show Jr.'s career averages and his averages vs. lefties was worse, yes, but not by nearly as much as you see other players. One of the reasons mentioned is that when Jr. came up at 19 he played every day and got to work through those difficulties with the lefties. Nowadays they platoon guys so much that when they do finally see a lefty he's lucky to even hit the daggone ball. One time that Welsh actually said something that made the slightest hint of sense.

If I had any pull I'd go out and find a washed up lefty (hey Milty) and hire him to throw batting practice to the Reds everyday. If all we are going to have are lefties might as well make em hit a lefty in practice.
