Reds Tidbits (2008 season)

I have to admit I've been impressed with E5 over the past week or so. I was calling him out, not alone in that, and he's been on fire. As soon as he learns to go opposite field with that outside pitch instead of trying to pull it, he'll be a much much tougher out. Good for Edwin.

Jerry Hairston Jr., welcome to the Cincinnati Reds my friend! Runners in scoring position, he hits them in. 2 outs in the inning, he still hits and gets the runners moving or in. The pitcher gets lazy on him, he steals a base. Thank you for reminding us that there are still players who do the little things!

Finally, Dunn and Phillips off the HR schneide. With E5 hitting now Dunns getting more to hit. Now when Griff gets hot in the next month or so, the scoreboard should get a workout.

Can we say anything more about Volquez and Cueto? Money. How awesome will it be when Bailey finally has full control over his pitches and makes it up north making Bronson Arroyo our worst starting pitcher?! Awesome. (Actually Bronson may be the worst already but that #5 spot has been atrocious thus far.)

I'm happy to see Hairston Jr up and Castro gone, but felt the need (in the absence of a post from Jax) to piss on everybody's parade and remind you that Hairston Jr is already 31, and a lifetime .250 hitter with a .350 slugging percentage. What this means is that the price of last night's career performance is going to be two straight days of 0-fer-4s, since he's got to eventually swing that 4-of-6 into a 4-of-16.

When Jax asked for a right handed, power hitting, center fielder to put this team over the top, I'm pretty sure Jerry Hairston Jr wasn't at the top of his wish list. :tongue2:

Make no mistake about it: The Reds did not win last night because of Hairston's bat or Volquez's pitching. A $70M roster in the Queen City does not ensure victories. The truth is, I engineered last nights win.

You see, I have explained on this board before that I am a fucking bizzaro world rabbits foot when it comes to sports merchandise and apparel. If I buy a jersey of a player, that player will either abruptly retire in his prime, be traded, or be hit by a bus (or Ray Lewis). Hell, sometimes when I buy a hat or t-shirt, entire franchises move cities, or at the very least the uniform will be changed.

Now, a deep dark secret - and I'm not proud of this - I've been carrying for the past two weeks is that I'm wholly responsible for the Red's slide after the good start. What happened was on the Friday night when the Reds went to Pittsburgh for game 1 of that series, I dug out an old Reds jersey to wear to poker. What happens when I bust out the Reds jersey for the first time all season? The Reds get swept by maybe the worst fucking team in all of baseball and the slide begins.

My bad. I'm sorry 'bout that.

I have since washed that Reds jersey and hung it back where it belongs in the back of my closet, where it cannot be seen and its mojo cannot cross paths with a Reds telecast, and of course, like clockwork, the Reds have since won 2 of their last 3.

OK. So about last night ... my son plays peanut league, coach pitch baseball. His team is the Padres -- same gear as the San Diego away jerseys and caps. So last night, after practice, I explain to my wife that since I am helping out with the team this year and am taking on the role of assistant coach, I should probably run over to the mall and go to Lids/Hat World and buy a Padres hat. I then make a smart-ass remark to my wife that I should just buy a hat for all the 29 MLB teams other than the Reds, since doing so would ensure a Reds World Series run by default since they're the only team I wouldn't jinx.

So I bought a Padres hat last night. What happened? The Reds came back from a deficit to win, and the Padres lost a lead in a game where Jake Peavy got shelled. Jake Peavy never gets shelled by the Houston Astros. Jake Peavy is to the Houston Astros as Roy Oswalt is to the Cincinnati Reds. Peavy OWNED that game last night.

I buy a fucking hat and Peavy gets chased in six innings.

So anyway, details will be forthcoming soon on my Cincinnati Reds Run to the World Series PayPal fund, where you can assist me in collecting hats and jerseys for all 29 MLB teams other than the Reds through contributions to the fund, which should ensure a minimum of 58 Reds victories. Since the road team always wins a game I attend, I figure I can make the trips from here to both Pittsburgh and Cleveland, which will get us another 6 wins. That'll put us at 64 wins. Add the 9 in the bank already and we're at 73.

I'll just have to trust the Reds can win 15 other games on their own.

I know.

But let me say right here and right now that Lance Berkman is my favoritest player ever and I'll be pulling for him to do well tonight, since rooting for weak dribblers to the SS hasn't ever worked once.

Belisle's first start 'a beating'

COMMENT: Do you think Belisle can rebound from his first start?

CINCINNATI ? Matt Belisle discovered quickly that those were not the Tampa Yankees, the Birmingham Barons nor the Pawtucket Pawsox.
Those were the three minor-league teams he faced and beat on his rehab assignment for a sore arm and he put together a 1.09 ERA.

Reds' Volquez up to speed against Dodgers

> What do you think of Hairston's play?

By Hal McCoy

CINCINNATI ? When Edinson Volquez pitches, the Cincinnati Reds emerge from their cocoons and become battering butterflies.
Volquez pitches masterfully, and the offense comes alive ? as in the 8-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday, April 22, in Great American Ball Park.
Volquez (3-0) grabbed the attention of Dodgers hitters with his first pitch at 94 miles an hour. His 100th pitch? 94 miles an hour, and he used it, along with a biting slider and a low-diving changeup, to hold L.A. to three hits over seven innings.
