Reds Tidbits (2008 season)

BTW anyone wondering about Bruce, even tho he left the game early last night due to a shoulder injury, which is said to be no big deal and will only require an off day or two...

He had a homer, triple, and single, and was going for the cycle before he got pulled...Seems to be warming up...

596!

3-run HR to CF for Griffey - wind blowing IN from CF.

Was at the game today, great day for some baseball.

I know its a tradition at Wrigley, but I would've kept Griffey's blast! He hit it about 15 feet away from me in the bleachers, and the guy that threw it back tossed it about 60 feet or so. Idiot!

Got to watch on WGN, very nice to watch a win. It was needed. :)

I was just glad to watch a game without having to hear Jeff Brantley speak. If Reds fans really need a whipping boy he should be your guy. He opens his mouth and nothing but bullshit comes out.

I will admit the win today gave me a little hope. I mean after watching today I realised something. The only reason the cubs were winning was because the wind was blowing out of center field. But today the wind was calm and we stomped them...

Is there anywhere you can find the red schedule with dates of the aired games.

Didn't get to see the game but nice to read about a W.

Time for some roster juggeling when they get back tommorrow I'd say.

At the very least I hope Belisle and Bray replace Fogg and Coffey but it wouldn't suprise me if Belisle comes up, Fogg goes to mop up and Coffey goes down.

Position players/bench gets a lot more interesting. Ross is in midseason form down in L'ville (sub .200 BA) so I don't know what the hold up is in calling him back up.

Bottom line to me is that 2 of Hatte/Freel/Hopper (plus prospects?) need to be turned into RH bench/platoon power.

Marty was beside himself on the broadcast today about the lack of effort by Krivs to address the lack of RH bench/platoon power. Marty, Jeff, and John Fay all seemed to agree that Dusty doesn't think much of Castro. Brantley in a shocked voice said he'd heard there is interest in him. I got the impression that this was Krivs roster out of ST but Dusty will be having some input on moves. They were expecting maybe to see Hairston or Jolbert Cabrera taking his place. The were guessing in upwards of 5 moves taking place, but more likely 1 or 2.

Anyways, this one is for Jax... listen to Bill James own Paul Daugherty on 700WLW, interview starts about 2/3 of the way through:

Best line after Daughtery tries to poke fun at fans who think they can run a ballgame because they read stats on Baseball Prospectus:

"It could be you are a small minded person who is intimidated by the fact that they know more than you do." :slappy:

As Doc presses the point, James nails him that all kinds of jackasses think they can run ball clubs for lots of asinine reasons like they played HS ball or can run a hardware store... it doesn't invalidate the stats. He concedes that there are other aspects to running a club like managing personalities, but it doesn't lessen his premises. Many other gems in this interview, James is a bit of a prick but spot on.

I would be up for Bako and Ross doing the catching duties and Valentine taking a hike...

Hatte can be the lefty off the bench...Ross/Bako make for a solid two man catching staff...Both very good at defense...Then you have a righty lefty deal as well...

Then I am up for Belisle taking the spot of Fogg...Fogg going to pen, and Coffey taking a hike...I would have Bray come up...But I still would like to see just a couple more weeks of production to make sure he is ready...

Then I find a way to get Hairston or Cabera up here...Probably get rid of Castro...

Someone should have reminded Marty he wanted Norris Hopper to be the starting LF last year. Now he's crying about no RH power off the bench. What a dick.

I've been around the game 30+ years, HOF writer/broadcaster comes to mind as reasons why some feel they know more than the unwashed masses.

Hatte has trade value. Give me nacho as the lefty off the bench and emergency C. Bako and Ross as the C platoon. Kepp is the backup 1B with nacho the emergency. That way you have more flexability per roster spot and (hopefully) get something of value for Hatte.

get rid of the word "Probably" as it relates to getting rid of castro and I agree 100%

REDS 9, CUBS 2
Votto steps up to save Reds, lifts teammates

By Hal McCoy
Staff Writer

Thursday, April 17, 2008

CHICAGO ? There was no cask dangling around his neck, but Joey Votto was an award-winning St. Bernard rescue dog Thursday afternoon, April 17, in Wrigley Field for the Cincinnati Reds.
Just when his team needed rescuing the most, withering on a five-game losing streak, Votto hoisted his Louisville Slugger and lifted his teammates with it, driving in the first five runs of a 9-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs.

Continued.....

I agree about trading Hatte, but he had a great spring, and now he isn't going to be getting many at bats if someone wanted him they would of already tried to get him...

I think WK just passed on some deals to keep hatte as insurance in case Votto regressed. Also with a proven vet like hatte the limited AB's aren't as much of a deal killer, he has a body of work that will pretty much tell a GM what he is getting.

One thing to add...

EE has an 8 game hitting streak...Avg. up to .240 and is hitting over .400 in his last 8 games...

BTW weather warms up and looks what happen...He doesn't like the cold...The Pitt series was to cold for him...

Yep, I've lost patience with him a few times myself but I always remind myslef how young he is and how good he will be. He gets the Dunn treatment from the Reds media which means he gets it from the average Reds fan. Damn shame imo, most of them wouldn't know real talent if it slapped them in the face. They are too busy waiting for guys like Freel to be the next Pete and have Marty and company telling them he could be.

Yeah this is true...Just would like to make the deal or move Valentine...If we were to keep Hatte and Dunn, and they walked at the end of the season for nothing...How many compensation picks would we get for those two...That would be a about 3 or 4 right...I mean we got one for Rich Aurillia...Not that I don't want to get anything for them, but if we don't draft picks would be nice to really add even more depth to the farm system...

I agree he does struggle at times and with his demeanor it makes it look like he doesn't give a shit, but Narron was just like the average fan that watched this and handled him horribly...

I love Freel's hustle but it is what it is hustle...anyone can hustle, but not everyone can hit 20 homers and drive in 80 runs...

Got to say kudos to E5. I've been hard on the guy but I don't hate him. He's very frustrating to watch at times. Brilliant couple of defensive plays yesterday and minus the questionable throw was pretty good all the way around. If he can do this more often than not, he'll never hear a bad word from me. Big IF. Joey Votto is coming around and I'm loving it. Beautiful glove work in the field and now his bat is catching fire also. He'll be at first for a long time in my opinion and that doesnt hurt my feelings.

Baker has got to do something to get Dunn going as much of you have already said. Maybe with the way Votto is going put him behind Dunn in the lineup and Griff in front of him or move him to cleanup with Phillips batting 5th? I dont really care about the RLRLRL thing maybe as much as others although when the bats are really going it makes it tough on the opposing pitchers.

Great game by Volquez yesterday as well. The first inning had me scared to death but I love the way he handled himself to get out of that inning and settle it down. We can go on and on about the young pitchers in this rotation but still cant say enough.

Been watching some highlights from AAA when I get lucky enough to find some. Bruce is a freaking stud, plain and simple. Billy Bray is ready or should be by about mothers day, May. Also, alot of young pitching down there right now other than Bailey. We almost cant go wrong in some of the guys we would choose to bring up right now, except for Majewski. That guy sucks.

Lets keep the bats going today for Arroyo, he needs to get a win and we need to beat the damn Brewers!
