Reds Tidbits (2008 season)

Here are the moves I'd try to make with this team:

  • Bring up Jay Bruce in June. This seems like a no-brainer (that may not be the best expression to use with regards to this front office). I understand if the Reds are holding him back to keep his arb clock from starting, but bring him up after two months is the simplest thing the Reds can do to add instant offense and make the bench a little deeper.
  • Trade for a RH power bat at either 1B or 3B. I've had Encarnacion's back for a while now, but ultimately I want what's best for the Reds. I think the Reds have some chips to work with to try to bring an impact bat at one of the corners, and I'd look first to upgrade whichever one of Edwin or Votto doesn't start to put it together. For now, it's looking like that man might be Edwin. He's still young and another team may think a change of scenery could help. You could give up one of either Votto or Hatteberg. You could trade Homer Bailey. I'd like to be able to trade Freel, but I don't think anybody else will want him unless the Reds eat his contract.
  • DFA Todd Coffey. I'm done with this guy. He's been so bad he's become the subject of a running joke (pun fully intended) among me and anybody else I talk about the Reds with. Bring up Roenicke to take his place.
  • Re-install Belisle in the rotation in Fogg's spot. At best Fogg is a swingman on this team. I'm not sure I even want him there at this point. I think the only guy in the bullpen who I like less (save Coffey, who is already gone in my mind) would be Affeldt, but Fogg's lack of lefthandedness and smaller contract makes him easier to can.
  • Move Dunn up in the batting order. Like Bucky Katt pointed out, and others have mentioned repeatedly so far this season, Dunn is being junkballed and pitched around every time he steps into the batter's box. Somebody needs to find a way to take Baker to task. Dunn should be hitting ahead of Griffey every time. At this point I really don't care about the other stuff he does with the lineup - his placement is taking the bat out of the hands of the teams most dangerous hitter. Besides, with the rate at which he gets on base (even when he's not being pitched around) he should be placed higher in the order.
  • Find a catcher. It may be the team's biggest need, but might have to be their lowest priority for now just because I don't think the Reds would be able to do anything doing the season that will have a significant impact. I do think Bako has done well enough to earn a spot on this team, and I wouldn't mind Valentin being gone when Ross makes it back. I'm not counting on that though.

MUTLIPLE RUN INNING!!!!

My first thought as well...

I like the idea of batting Griffey then Dunn...On a regular day with Kepp in the two hole it allows him to get on...Griffey to do some damage with the pitcher knowing he has Dunn after him...Then Dunn can get on and let guys like Phillips, EE, Votto with their not so great on base percentages, but solid hitting bring guys around...

I would put Phillips, EE, Votto...I think eventually Votto moves up in the lineup, but EE is the better OBP guy and you know how they have to split up the lefties...

Nice to also see them letting Dunn, Griffey, and Votto play against a lefty...the reason we lose against lefties is not because our lefties aren't that great against them, but because we put in guys like Freel, Hopper, Castro, and take out all power from the lineup...

Love what Votto brings...I tried to tell you guys to stay positive...

Not sure I understand the decision to hit Volquez...I guess nothing was going on in the inning, and you save a bench player, but still kinda dumb to have the pitcher hit if you are going to take him out...

BTW if anyone is trying to watch, it is on WGN the Cubs station...Not on FSN today...

Solid outing from Volquez, even tho he struggled at times to find the plate...Nice to see once again Dusty isn't stretching the young guys out much...

Whew....Burton pitches into trouble, but gets out giving up just one run.

Reds are batting .059 (1-17) with the bases loaded this season and .111 (6-54) with runners in scoring position and 2 outs. My god.....I knew it was bad....wow...:(

Dunn would of had back to back to if not for the wind...

Nice day for the offense...Hopefully we can continue this back to the home stand...

EE with a 2-3 day, single, double, and a walk and Votto with the bases clearing double and 2 run homerun...

Edwin now with two doubles today - but also an error.

My bad 2 doubles...The error was a basehit...Would of taken a near perfect throw to get him...I thought the best thing about that play was Votto coming off the bag to get the ball and not trying to stretch and make matters worse...

Nice second inning from Burton...I really hope that he doesn't flame out...I really like his stuff and he gets enough K's to make a solid relief pitcher, but at times he scares me like he did in the 6th...but he was a little unlucky with the broken bat hit and the dribble to EE that was discussed above...

Paul Bako is now tied for the Major League lead in triples. :tongue2:

Nope they gave the 3rd baseman an error...

EE sure had an interesting 9th inning there...

The ball ate him up, he let it come down out of the air and made a great throw...

Then he came into field a ground ball, fell on his ass, and almost got lee out on a great throw from his ass...

Then he makes a routine play, but throws to second and throws it by Castro, even tho Castro didn't give him any help at first...Even the Cubs announcers were saying how he stretched to early and made a bad play on the ball...

My bad on the error. Error on me, I guess. :tongue2: I was fixing something to eat during that part of the game, so I guess I didn't quite catch that one.

Great point about Votto. I've been hollerin' about that for the last few years, and I'm glad Votto seems to have the good sense to get the ball in his glove and keep a bad play from becoming bad inning.
