Reds Tidbits (2008 season)

If we can go 16-11 or better in our next 27 with the only series being against winning teams being the Mets and Brewers...

We would probably be ready in the STL series to try and over take them for the wildcard lead if they still have the lead at that time...
The Reds are five back of the Mets in the loss column. If they don't show up for that four game series after the break, what the team does against the rest of the Central will not matter.

Get out the brooms

I sure hope so.

47-49 at the break I can not complain. All we need is a winning streak or 15 out of 18 games, stay consistent.

I think right now the teams to watch in terms of the wild card are Milk, STL, LAD, and NYM...

(This would have looked better had I posted it before the game today but here it goes anyway)

With the mental vacations this team takes virtually every other game, don't get your hopes up.

Bailey pitching the way he did today was a good sign, and short of Bray's appearance the bullpen held up it's end of the deal but in the end they found a way to lose.

As a side note - I hope Votto isn't the first baseman of the future. He's going to top out at mediocre (at best) defensively.

"That doesn't make sense"

Dunn is a clumsy player, not a dumb player. I'm talking about the guys who get picked off at first base, miss the cutoff man, always hack at the first pitch, and pretty much anybody else who is liked by your typical WLW caller for "playing the game the right way" (whatever the fuck that means).

Losing Hairston is gonna suck. Hopefully the MRI tomorrow is negative and he just needs some rest. There is a clear difference in this team's results when he's in the lineup.

I blame today's loss on Dusty Baker. At the time he made the decision, I thought pulling Bailey was a mistake. He went out there and pitched very well, and getting through that inning against a player like Fielder would've been huge for his psyche. Not to mention the fact that Bray just was not that much better of an option at the time. You could tell Bailey was affected by getting pulled in that situation. Regardless of what one thinks about whether or not an emo kid like Bailey has a place with this organization, I anyone would agree that it is in the Reds best interest to get the most out of him right now - either to prepare him to be a fixture in the Reds' rotation or to shine him up for a trade. I think leaving him in could have paid big dividends, but instead Dusty made the move and lost - in more ways than one.

Also, I don't think Weathers should have been in there in the 9th. He's been used and abused over the last few days. Cordero should have been in there to start the inning. I think in that kind of situation - ninth inning of a tied game - you should use your best reliever available and then work your way down as the game progresses. That's especially true given how sorry the Brewers' bullpen is. Cordero represented the best chance the Reds had to extend the game to a tenth inning - and Sabathia would have had to come out eventually, right?

On paper, the Reds should not have won this game anyway. They were in a position to steal it though, and they let it get away like they often do. They will not contend for real until they can correct that.
