Reds Tidbits (2007 Season)

The Thompson kid from that trade is throwin well in Dayton...So if Bray can get healthy and show his worth and if the Magic man can get back to his good days, that trade doesnt look so bad...

I do believe that the A's are still offering the same thing they were offering b4 Deno went down...

Thompson is in his first year back from shoulder surgery and pitching in A ball. Majewski was hurt and overused when we got him, Bray is now hurt as well. The minor league infielder (name escapes me) is gone.

Nothing against the 3 guys but its certainly not what you would expect back for two bats like AK and FeLo. I had no love for those two but they were our only MLB level trading chips and WK spent them like a drunken sailor on shore leave.

Time will tell with this one but "PTBNL and cash" usually just means cash.

Runs remain scarce for Reds
Pirates 3, Reds 1
BY JOHN FAY | [email protected]
1x1.gif

PITTSBURGH - You know it's going bad when you're heartened by hits, not runs.
"It was nice to see us get, what, nine hits," Reds manager Jerry Narron said. "We hit the ball better. We just didn't get anything to fall."
Better, not good enough.
The Reds fell to the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-1 before a crowd of 22,638 at PNC Park. It was the Reds' third straight loss and dropped them to 10-13 overall.
The Reds have scored a grand total of two runs over the last 15 innings. But the offensive malaise goes back further than that. Since April 14, the Reds have been held to two runs or fewer in seven of 13 games. Not coincidently, they are 4-9 in that span.

Narron backs Stanton for setup
Reds notebook
BY JOHN FAY | [email protected]

PITTSBURGH - Don't be surprised if left-hander Mike Stanton pitches the eighth inning with the Reds leading, no matter who's due up for the other side.
"We might use Stanton," Reds manager Jerry Narron said. "Left-hander, right-hander, it doesn't matter. We'll see how he feels. I've got full confidence in Stanton when he's out there. Last year, he went over to San Francisco and did a good job closing. That's not to say it's in cement."
Stanton saved eight games for the Giants last season after being traded from Washington on July 28.

Denorfia to finish rehab in Oakland
BY JOHN FAY | [email protected]

PITTSBURGH - Chris Denorfia didn't see this coming at all.
"It's pretty shocking," he said.
The Reds traded the outfielder to the Oakland A's for two players to be named and cash Friday.
A player rarely expects a trade. But in Denorfia's case it was particularly stunning because he's rehabilitating from April 3 ligament-replacement surgery on his right elbow. He isn't expected to be able to play until October at the earliest.
"I wasn't even thinking about next year," he said. "I was just working on the rehab. This makes me think about next year."

1. Hey, I resemble that remark, but when in Thailand.....BANGKOK!!!!:sneaky:

2. Could we get that PTBNL to be named, Nick Swisher?

Any other way unless that "cash" option is enough to buy Big Papi or ARod, its not going to do us any frickin good.

PTBNL #1 is Marcus McBeth (going to have some fun with that one).

Scouting report I gleaned from RZ:

Here's what Kevin Goldstein wrote about McBeth in January (classified as an average prospect)

Marcus McBeth, rhp
DOB: 8/23/80
Height/Weight: 6-1/185
Bats/Throws: R/R
Drafted: 4th round, 2001, University of South Carolina
What he did in 2006: 0.00 ERA at High A (8.2-1-2-14); 2.48 ERA at AA (54.1-43-20-65); 11.05 ERA at AAA (7.1-7-6-7)
The Good: Converted outfielder showed remarkable feel for his craft in just his second year on the mound, taking to the closer's role like a veteran and reaching Triple-A. Fastball sits at 92-94 mph while slider has become a viable offering with good sink and run. His best pitch is a changeup, which one official calls the best in the system and "like something out of a Bugs Bunny cartoon ? it just stops."
The Bad: Still new to pitching, McBeth is still learning the mental side of the game when it comes to exploiting hitter's weaknesses. His stuff falls just short of closer-worthy, and he turns 27 during the year, so there's no projection there.
The Irrelevant: McBeth's final hitting line in 1010 pro plate appearances is .233/.311/.359 with 236 strikeouts in 881 at-bats.
In a Perfect World, He Becomes: A late-innings reliever.
Gap Between What He Is Now, And What He Can Be: Low ? McBeth will begin the year closing at Triple-A Sacramento, but will likely make his big-league debut at some point in the season.

And a good synopsis of where this puts the organization in terms of replacing old soft tossers from the pen with young hard throwers from Reds44 at RZ.

As OBM said, the Reds are starting to collect some good, young arms. It's a nice change.

Todd Coffey (26) throws in mid 90s
Jon Coutlangus (26) lefty, doesn't throw real hard, but he's looked good.
Jared Burton (26) throws in the mid 90s
Billy Bray (24) lefty, throws in the 90s and has real good stuff
Brad Salmon (27) oldest of the bunch, but he can get it in the mid 90s
Marcus McBeth (26) throws in the mid 90s, with a ++ changeup and a slider.
Calvin Medlock (24) consistently in the 90s, with a good changeup.

It's nice to see us starting to collect some young, power arms.

Also today they DFA'd Frenchie and brought Salmon up!

In lieu of winning this is pretty good news.

Yes, and he's having a nice little start to the season in Tampa Bay. I think he got shipped out in the Cormier deal last year.

Yes, lets not forget in our applause of DFA'ing Cormier that WK shipped a prospect, had to extend the contract a year to get a guy who obviously has very little value to anyone else in MLB.

Kudos for doing the right thing now, but its just cleaning up a mess of his own creation.

I am still very leery of WK's abilities but he is active, I'll give him that.

Hey, in this case Change Is Good.

Put the young guys out there now if we're only going to be able to play for next year anyway. Baptise 'em early and who knows. Cant be much worse right?

Depending on who the young guy is and his contract status. No need to start the arb clocks for the clunker WK's built in '07.
